Hi, I do working trials training and have been in one Open trial, it was great :P
I'm nothing like as experienced as Tohme (or MM) but may be able to offer some thoughts?
At present I'm having collywobbles over the scale so not sure where I'm going with it, but I will say it's the most fun and interesting type of training I've ever done. I will always be pleased I've done this training. The nosework is esp. interesting although also a bit of a mystery <g>.

Have a look on the working trials web site to see when the trials are, there should be one being held sometime near to where you live, go and see the dogs tracking and searching, and watch the control rounds being carried out to give you an idea of what is required.
There are sometimes one day courses for beginners to go on, and if there is a working trials "club" near to where you live, they will probably help. You really need to be training with knowledgeable experienced people who can give you help and advice, also you need the land to track on.
I worked my standard poodle to CD Ex, UD EX, and before him my border collie to WD Ex, and had great fun. Good luck.
