Topic Dog Boards / General / neutering question
- By luvhandles Date 03.04.06 11:44 UTC
Hi,
Harvey is now 7 months old and has just started cocking his leg. I have noticed now that his wee really smells strong and is quite unpleasent when he manages to wet his leg feathering. Can anyone tell me if neutering would help?

Thanks

Hayley

From what I know, Hayley - and I'm no expert! - neutering probably wouldn't help at all. Nips is now a leg cocker par excellence and I don't think he'd revert to squatting like a gurlie if he was neutered. If the smell is really horrid you might care to get Harvey checked out in case he has an infection.

All dogs wee smells, so does ours. Make sure he has plenty of water, he might
wee more but it wont be so strong.
In my opinion! No, neutering doesn't.

Hi Roz, I don't think he has an infection or anything - it's just a general 'dog wee' smell and I thought perhaps teritorial wee was stronger than normal:confused: He doesn't drink loads so I suppose that isn't helping matters. He's only just over the past week started cocking his leg and weeing when out on walks - he would never wee anywhere but in our garden before..........hope he doesn't start weeing up my furniture:eek:

I definitely think "grown up" wee smells stronger and since there's barely a blade of grass round here that Nips hasn't needed to water I get a lot of exposure to it. But for sure, he hasn't thought to cock his leg indoors and he's been cocking for nearly 4 months now.  Although when he went out to dinner with us the other week to a house where they have a much older bitch AND a pile of wood in their hallway his leg was "half cocked" against the wood pile before I reminded him that this was indoors!!!

Hayley my 11 year old Cavalier is the same, and he's been neutered for the past 8 years. :) Made no difference at all. In addition neutering a Cavalier can make the coat a lot more difficult to cope with in some dogs.

Hi Hayey,

There is no evidence to show that entire dog wee smells stronger than neutered dog wee, so neutering shouldn't make a difference. Change in diet and urinary tract infections do however have an effect. Make sure he always has water around.

Cheers,
Patty
