Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch gaining weight as early as 4 weeks post mating??
- By Margo [gb] Date 01.04.06 23:58 UTC
Hi, I was just wondering if it is at all possible for a (pregnant) bitch to start showing at 4 weeks? (SP).
I have bred in the past, although a completely different breed (BT). Which she had two litters & didn't show until around 7 weeks. but then again, they have much smaller litters than the SP!
Can I just point out that I have not yet increased her food intake & by 'showing' I mean thickening at the waist!
Anyone else experienced this

Margo I think some bitches get wider very quick even though puppies would be tiny. One of my bitches did.

I thought you were on the search for another breed??

Hi, that was a quick response, thanks!
Yeah I was undecided on a BT or a lhasa, but decided on the BT as I'm more familiar with the breed. I have found a breeder, but am now waiting until next summer!

Hi again Blue, Just noticed you also responded to my 'help which breed?' post. Please dont think I posted that tonight aswell as this post, although I love dogs, I'm not that mad! I actually posted the first one a few months ago! and in response to your question: my two breeds are the standard poodle (which you will be aware of) & I also have a scruffy little crossbreed terrier!

I've had bitches look really big at 4 weeks, but only go on to have a small litter, and then again I've had girls not even look pregnant and gone on to have a decent size litter.

One of my girls was massive at 4 weeks, but sadly aborted at 7 weeks :(

Hi Margo,
My girl was showing by 4 weeks although it was not confirmed until 6 weeks.

Hi Margo,

My bitch was kind of showing at 3 weeks, her rib cage was certainly expanding, I wondered if I was imagining it so I took a measurement and a week later her ribcage was another 2" bigger. We are now on day 51 and can feel the puppies wriggling away

Between week 3 1/2 and week 5 1/2 Molly gained 3.6 kilo's with no extra food going in.

Thankyou all for your replies, I'm actually taking her to the vets in a few days anyway & we are meant to be having her scanned (but I'm not so sure) as she does tend to get quite stressed & I'm thinking the less she is messed around with the better! SharonM- I'm sorry to hear about you losing a litter at 7wks, you must have been devastated! x

Thank you Margo, it was a couple of years ago now, but the vet thinks she had way too many pups to cope with.

Sometimes their ribcage springs pretty early too, the only time we scan now is if there is a problem.

I'm having her weighed again on Tuesday(7 1/2 weeks) just to monitor her weight gain, so I'll be interested in how much weight she has put on over the following 2 weeks, previous weight gain was more than 10% of her normal body weight, although I assume alot of this is fluid.

My Jozi did last year much to my amazement as she is a big roomy bitch and the litter was 7 pups, not a huge litter though they wre all very good size and a couple very large, but ended up average by weaning.
