Yesterday Pan got hit by a car. He wasn't badly hurt, thank god, he escaped with only a torn nail and some bruises. I had gone out and was walking down the road when I heard him crash through the fencing that we have over the gate way into the orchard. I turned around and saw the car in the corner of my eye. It was like watching watching in slow motion. He came running through the hedge and out onto the road and the car clipped his back end spinning him into the ditch. He had just bulldosed right through the temporary fenceing. How I don't know, I keep checking it's secure because we have chickens in the orchard and xbreed likes then a little to much. I was fine until I had got him all sorted out and checked by the vet then it all caught up with me, I've spend the last day going all shakey and bursting into tears. Pan can't work out what all the fuss is about although he seems to be enjoy being allowed to sleep on my bed last night, his only complaint is that he can't go for walks. I've been doing some training and hiding treats but he is already getting bored. Anyone have any sugestions for keeping a mad 8month old occupied?

Poor you, sounds like you're in shock.  I'm sure the dog is fine though - my old springer got hit by a car, went right over the bonnet and couldn't use his back legs for a week but never thought twice about it.  It's important that you try to be as normal as possible with him or he'll pick up on your anxiety and maybe develop worries about going out.  Why can't he go for walks?

How awful, stop thinking about what might have been now, or you will drive yourself mad, he was very, very, lucky. Can you not take him out as he is still hurt?  Or because you are worried?  If you are worried get a long exercise lead for him, so that he can walk and be safe too.

If it is because he is not well enough yet, then lots of tug rope games are good and will not cause him to have to walk around a lot, or just let him cuddle up on your lap, most dogs are  happy to just be stroked and talked to and will happily sleep more.

How terrible for you, that's like a waking nightmare. My puppy had a torn ligament so I've been trying to create 'quiet games' for 4 months! I've come up with a version of the shell game. I hide treats under one of three plastic cups and he finds the cookie. I make the game progressively harder by moving them further apart and taking him out of the room. We also play find the hidden toy. He waits while I hide a toy in another room. It can take him a couple of minutes to find it sometimes. I have a mini tug toy that lets us play tuggy while lying down. He has a buster cube he really likes too. Plus tricks like learning how to close the door, catch treats from his muzzle, balance toys on his head, etc. He'd rather be running through the woods but needs must... I hope Pan recovers quickly.
