Topic Dog Boards / General / Spaying bitch after having puppies

Wondered why you guys thought was the best time to spay a bitch after she has had puppies.

Seemed to be mixed opinions.

After puppies but before next season or after the first season after the puppies :-) ?

I have my own opinion but wondered what you thought and why.

i would go with the vets advise if i didnt feel it was too soon after pups which would be before the pups were 8 weeks i wouldnt do it anytime before then. Plus her teats would still be swollen and if it isnt absolutely needed then i would wait for them to go down.

When we had Rosie spayed she had had a litter, then a season, then she was spayed 3 months after her season.  I personally felt it gave her hormones time to settle down.

i think the norm is approx 3 months after giving birth, half way before next season, as long as the milk has dried up :)

Not until all trace of Milk is goen was my vets advice, which in my bitches case was 12 weeks after pups were born, or 23 weeks after her season ahd started, so I was sailing clse to the wind, and any longwer and she would ahve been due in season too soon, and would ahve waited until next time.

I am thinking of getting one of mine spayed, she has just finished her season, so will be phoning the vet for advice on this as its a thing ive not really had done before, only one due to a pyo.  I feel I am getting too old now and not in as good health as I was for looking after pups. I thought it was best about half way between a season am I right in thinking this?

Hi Irene,

I agree they generally say between seasons

but between season after puppies would make the puppies approx 8 weeks old based on my bitches normal patterns . Most of mine have had their seasons 5 months after having puppies.

I was wondering if that is really enough time for the bitches body.  They would probably be better nearer 12-14 weeks , completely dried up and hopefully back to their normal selfs.

I let mine have a season after a litter before spaying them if they come into season every six months, two of my girls cycled at 10 months and were spayed when the pups were 12 weeks.
