hi, i have three dogs that all sleep in the same room together. vertually every morning when i get up and let them out, one of them has sicked up bile overnight.  its not got food in it, its just yellow liquid thats a bit frothy.  at the moment, i dont actually know which dog it is although i have my suspisions as to who it is. its been happening for a while now, and although all my dogs are eating, drinking and seem very happy, im obviously concerned that this is not normal. whilst i know i need to firstly figure out which one it is, and i will take him/her to the vets, but in the meantime, i was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to what could be causing this?

Undoubtedly it's because there's no food in the stomach and the dog needs its breakfast! I solved this by giving a biscuit last thing at night which is usually enough to last the eight hours or so till the morning.

Yes agree with JG, have several dogs like this, if they get too hungry they sick up bile.

my dog Sydney used to do this every morning about 6 o' clock. I solved it by feeding her dinner a bit later in the evening and giving a treat at bedtime.  Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with one of my old male dogs I used to check who it was by rubbing a tissue around the mouth first thing in the morning you usually find  it will be a bit yellow.

I used to give him arrowroot biscuits morning and night solved the problem.

It could be that they need a slightly larger bedtime snack - I give my dalmatians a Bonio each (so you can gauge size of dog to size of snack!).

maybe its the type of treat you are giving ...try changing it.

Also if it is a recent thing I would find out which one it is and if really concerned have him/her checked out as I had a rough who was bringing up bile (completely different dog to my other male his was just delicate tum) he had a liver problem but he did have other significant ailments too his urine had a distinct smell etc

they normally have a hide chew. if its who i think it is, i would be concerned to be honest because i dont have much luck with him, he has all sorts of problems bless him, and i do tend to worry whats going to be next with him! i have to say i havent noticed a distinct smell, although he does wee and awful lot for his size.. a cocker spaniel. the list is endless with him, he is only 3 and he has endless problems with his anal glands, his ears, his teeth and breath, he had to have two deformed toes removed from his front feet and i do worry what is going to go wrong with him next.  he is and always has been very lethargic, not a typical cocker at all. everyone i know who has or has had cockers say they have never met one like him.  another thing that does concern me about him is that over the last 8 or 9 months he has started to get aggressive tendencies towards other dogs he does not know (mailnly on the lead) and wondered wheter i may be a sign of physical pain as he never used to be like this? any ideas?

I'd be concerned about giving hide chews when you're not there to supervise, as there have been plenty of cases of dogs choking on them. :( A biscuit that doesn't become sticky is a lot safer.

hi jg, funny you should say that, my lab got a bit stck in his throat at lunchtime today (i was with him), which did worry me a bit. do you know of any treats that aren't too fattening as my lab puts on weight easily

no he hasnt had his thyroid checked. can they have thyroid problems from puppies? because he has always been lethargic, even as a puppy, i think he spent about ten minutes awake, then the next 5 hours asleep!! he wasnt a very playful puppy at all either. oh my poor boy, he is just one big vet bill!!

how big a biscuit. i had to start giving mine pigs ears or another large treat to stop her throwing up. she sometimes does it in the late afternoon if she has breakfast early

Ahh your poor baby he has been through the mill ....my boy (RIP) had untold problems too through poor breeding we did our best for him too we all loved him to bits he rattled with all the pills he took but it paid off as we had him for 15 and half years a good age for a Rough.

I dont give anything other than an arrrowroot bis .
The only chew I do give  occasionally after grooming are hartz chew bone from tesco (white) plus I never leave them alone either.... have heard horror stories..

One of my SWD pups is given Burns Ocean treats and he loves them, not much fun when he comes up to you with his smelly breath though and seems to love to burp in your face and wash his mouth on you straight after eating one :d  Thank God I don't own him :d :d

well they will be going down to once a week then. they love the burns ocean bites as well so. is one of them ok to give every night?

No need to be sorry about anything Anna.  This is a board where we can share information; there woudn't be much point any of us being here if we knew it all already!  You didn't know ears were deep fried and I didn't know you could get 'em air dried!

I only feed raw bones but my cavaliers don't "do"raw bones so two have the Air Dried  Pigs Ears & the other has decided at almost 10 to like tripe sticks. My GSD & BC love raw food but still nick the ears when the cavaliers aren't looking

Becky, I had this problem with both my shar-pei several years ago. I found that giving them a doggy biscuit or a schmacko at bedtime worked better than hide chews. I also found out that they vastly improved when I swapped them from the lamb recipe food they were on to the turkey of the same brand.

hi all, thanks for all your helpful adive. i found out this morning that its not the dog i thought it was and its actually my american cocker bitch, my mum caught her being sick this morning. im going to the vets soon for all thier kennel cough things so i think i will just mention it while im there. in the meantime i am going to stop giving them the hide chews at night and try something else.

Nips - who unhelpfully is as disinterested in food first thing as me! - is inclined to chunder when his stomach is particularly empty. I find a ginger biscuit or a Bonio does the trick.

i ended up having to take her to the vets today anyway as she has ruptured her cruciate ligament and she has to have surgery tomorrow. so, i thought i had better tell the vet about the bile and she said she was very gald i did and that she will do a pre-op blood test to check all her organs, so if there is anything wrong, i should find out tomorrow hopefully

My Belgian does the same - if she gets up before me and is moving around for more than a few minutes, she may sick up bile. It never happens if I give her her brekky in the first few minutes :)
She is fed twice a day, morning and evening, with some food rewards during the day.

I have two Belgians one who sometimes does the bile thing. He has seizures and the medicines sometimes cause upsets. For those who want a low fat snack....carrots !!! Our Belgie boy loves his carrot snack and because of his medication needs to watch his weight. The meds make him ravenous all the time and because he was raw fed for a while he adores his veg. Carrots, broccoli, some fruits like bananas, apples, strawberries etc.

Hi Becky, how did you get on at the vets?

Hi, in the end, after they xrayed her leg, they decided not to go with surgery and to try resting it first as it turns out the ligament is not completely ruptured (like they thought) but is just torn. resting her is proving very difficult though as she is not used to a crate so she is not at all impresed at being in there. i can take her in the gsrden on a lead to go to the toilet but of course then she thinks she is going for a walk! (and so do my other 2 dogs) i have phoned the vet and asked if its possible to have some sedation for her as she is going mad in the crate and not actually resting it much in there! just gotta wait for vet to phone back.  with regards to the bile, she had a blood test and everything was normal and her urine test was normal, so she thinks that it may just be indegestion but we are going to address that when her leg is a bit better.
