Hi Roni
What sort of theme (if any) are you thinking of?
With my RRs, I applied for African names - I got my first choice!
- By STARRYEYES Date 03.03.06 19:56 UTC
Hi Carina ,
nothing in particular as I heard it was quite hard and that they get knocked back so we got the atlas out and picked places out that we liked the sound of ....that we hadnt even heard of.
Then we went on the internet and picked out greek names african names scottish names  the lot plus some I wasnt too keen on either then we made some up using our own names oh and also the name of our own avenue even that got knocked back LOL

so its back to the drawing board..
Is there a book I can buy..

I sometimes use baby name books.  There are some sites on the net.  But I find it best to think of a theme and go from there.....

Hi Roni
Sorry to show my ignorance, but do bearded collies orignate from Scotland?
- By ridgielover Date 03.03.06 20:07 UTC
Hoping that they are of Scottish origin, have just googled Scottish names and having a look at some Gaelic names.  Quite like Mormaer - Scottish title, equivalent of British earl.  Going back for another look ... (can you tell there's not much on the tele!)
- By Moonmaiden Date 03.03.06 20:08 UTC
Beardies are a Scottish breed whereas Border Collies are not being from the Borders of Scotland & England & Wales & England ;)

I used a made up spelling of rare as on I don't breed often so any dog I've bred is rare & simply added the y. my cavalier's names are the same

You could try spelling a word as you say it rather than how it is written-eg Jodie spelt Joedee ! just a thought
- By het [gb] Date 03.03.06 20:13 UTC
If your wanting to go on place names - have you tried researching old names for the same place?

My affix is based on the town where we used to live - but is how the area - as it was then is recorded in the Doomesday book. The town has has several names, all along the same lines just slightly different spellings - so i decided to put them in order of appeal and applied - I was lucky to get my first choice so its worth a try.
- By ridgielover Date 03.03.06 20:26 UTC
Hi Roni
Continuing on the theme
Cineal (accent over the e) - kindred
Sliochd - lineage
Teaghlach - household
All rather appropriate but a bit of a challenge to pronounce!
- By STARRYEYES Date 03.03.06 21:33 UTC
Sorry havent been back on ....been on T'internet blast this is doing my head in!

like those ideas Carina Het and MM will give it some thought infactwill add them to my list if you dont mind?

back soon

Hi Roni
Still on the Gaelic theme, I liked some of the Gaelic names of plants (on site with same name)
Carina
- By ridgielover Date 03.03.06 22:12 UTC
Also:
Old Norse name Somarlior (accent over o), meaning "summer traveller" - quite appropriate for all those summer shows!
Gaelic version - Somhairle
Anglicised version - Somerled

Another interesting site "LUOAC - Scottish Names" gives Scottish words for rivers, mountains, etc

You're going to get bogged down with all this!  What have you come up with?  pm if you want - I'd be interested to know if you've found anything you fancy
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.03.06 03:33 UTC
Usng an at;as is probably the best way to ahve your names refused

Historically a lot of the old kennels were named after places, an that is why the names get refuse.

Only ever had one word refused Amulet which I had wanted for my Tula, and ended up with Amorek.

I use Polish words, and have never ahd any others refused.
- By Tippytoes [gb] Date 04.03.06 10:33 UTC
How about the celt phrase mueyl ar uy maryf - shame on my beard :D
- By STARRYEYES Date 04.03.06 10:45 UTC
When I said used the atlas it wasnt parts of E I S W that I looked at it was countries I'd never heard of with unusual sounding names but as you say B I wouldnt be the first person to think of that one ....LOL :)
- By helenRR [gb] Date 06.03.06 13:51 UTC
Hi
How did you get on with the kennel name?
We have just been throught the same process but luckily got our 8th choice!
We ended up submitting names we weren't even sure we liked as we had run out of ideas. when you look in Our Dogs and see the number of new affixies up for final approval it's staggering to think you have to try and think of something orginal, memorable and easyish to pronouce.
Much better thought that the KC can e-mail and turn down your choices though!
Good luck
- By Kash [gb] Date 06.03.06 13:58 UTC
Just a word of advice- DO NOT SEND NAMES YOU DO NOT LIKE -I've just been through the same process- had 24 turned down :-(  Sent in another 6 the last 4 were names I didn't even like either- I ended up being granted one of the ones I didn't like :-(  I thought it might grow on me but after a few days I realised I really didn't like the name and so contacted the kennel club who agreed to change it for me for £25 admin charge.  I now have a name I like after 31 tries and £95   Someone please tell me that registering puppies names will be easier :-)

- By helenRR [gb] Date 06.03.06 15:14 UTC
We were granted one of the ones we didn't really like as well but after we thought about going through all of the hassle of changing it we will just get on with it! it's not that bad!

The only issue i have with it is that it is the name of a hill near where OH used to live. However, we don't even live in that county so anyone from that area seeing the name and thinking we are close to them will have a shock!! :0
- By universalady Date 06.03.06 17:12 UTC
It took 37 attempts before we got our affix. In the end we took letters of the alphabet that do not get used too much, like Q, J, V, Q, Z and just added a few vowels. We then got the first one we tried!!!
- By STARRYEYES Date 06.03.06 21:13 UTC
sent of another 30 words again yesterday found this website called http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names/stars.htm

Note to Kash

When you send off you puppy names make sure you keep the same theme even on your reserve list.  We picked some obscure place names and had them turned down with the second choice along side granted.  Work on having twice as many names on the same theme as puppies just incase some of them are turned down.
- By STARRYEYES Date 07.03.06 10:38 UTC
will take this on board too...echo thanks for the tip !

Roni
- By Kash [gb] Date 07.03.06 11:55 UTC
Thanks- I now have at least another possibility for them all, 2/3 possibilities for the bitches- so I've got plenty to choose from should I need to :-)

I know this is an old thread but im new here!

We've just applied for a kennel name, we only sent one off as its the one we want and if we dont get that we're not going to bother (dont breed enough to have something we dont like for the sake of it!!).  We've yet to hear anything back but the kennel club have taken the money lol!  I didn't realise how hard it was to get a kennel name.. I hope we do get ours now...
- By STARRYEYES Date 17.03.06 17:04 UTC
Hi ,
I finally did get a kennel name one of which I am delighted with ..but I  did send off all -in -all 56 chosen words I heard pretty quickly that it was refused by e'mail so if its been a little while you might just be lucky  lots of people get thier chosen name first time so dont be disheartened.

good luck

Roni
- By Jess [gb] Date 20.03.06 16:14 UTC
We've still not heard anything back and its been nearly 2 weeks now.  Its not on the Kennel Club list of names but they haven't told us we haven't got it either..  We didn't put an email address on but put a phone number, would they have contacted by now if we definately couldn't use it??  Or does it usually take this long?  We want to register our new puppy with our kennel name if we get it so have been putting off sending off the registration stuff so we could just do it all once, didn't realise it would take this long to hear back though!!

We know it definately wasn't taken a year ago as the kennel name we want is in one of our dogs name's already
- By STARRYEYES Date 20.03.06 16:31 UTC
give them a ring!! I heard its much quick by email....

Roni
- By bazb [gb] Date 21.03.06 09:46 UTC
All names applied for and not automiatically rejected get advertised inthe Kennel Gazette, which only comes out once a month, so 2 weeks is not long to wait.
- By Kash [gb] Date 21.03.06 20:13 UTC
Jess- contact them, the KC policy is to try and turn an affix (provisionally) within 10 days :-)

Stacey x
- By Jess [gb] Date 21.03.06 20:14 UTC
well, we're not very happy with the kennel club now   They phoned us to say that the name we wanted to register was taken and gave us a number to phone if there were any problems, which of course there was as one of ours already has that name!!  It seems that the people registered that kennel name 'some time' ago, and the KC let us register her with it a year ago anyway   so now we have to pick a name as our dog's name has to be changed!!!  So we're trying to think of a name we like, which is hard as we only really wanted the name we applied for...
- By Kash [gb] Date 21.03.06 20:24 UTC
Oh dear :-(  I know exactly what it's like to go with other names when you've got your heart set on one in particular.  I can't believe the KC have messed up enough to allow the same name to be used twice!  Why don't you post what ideas you were thinking of and various names, places etc of some relevance to you - maybe if we throw some ideas your way you might find one you like :-)

Stacey x
- By Jess [gb] Date 21.03.06 21:23 UTC
Yes, we weren't very happy

The name we have been using is 'Wildbriars' as its our house name and i really like it, so we were thinking of something using that..  Maybe 'Briarsdown' - uses house name and the village we live in - or maybe Silverbriars - Pug colour and house name.

But they are likely to be gone i think
- By Kash [gb] Date 21.03.06 22:44 UTC
I like Briarsdown and Silverbriars.  What's your pooch/es name/s?  Childrens names?  Surname?

I chose Kashallan since everything else I went for was taken and my Son's name is Kane, Daughter- Shannon and 3 year old nephew Callum.

There are so many affixes these days you really need to move beyond what sounds like real words, in other words you need to make up something totally unique to get it passed.  My first choice began with Tre, meaning home of, then a snippet of the names of the first two of my dogs involved in showing making something so unusual, I suppose, that it was extremely unlikely anyone would have dreamt up the same.  Anyway it got passed no problem.
- By STARRYEYES Date 21.03.06 23:49 UTC Edited 21.03.06 23:53 UTC
we sent of approx 56 names in total phew ! we threw in one which is the name of our avenue adding brae and we got it!
All the other names we picked were quite extreme in comparison so we even made some up and they were taken which seems crazy...

So sometimes it is possible!

Also if you send it through email it is easier cause if they are refused they let you know within a day or so and you can return more names by return..

how about wildebriars or wilderbriars wildbreyers  or wyldbreyers or wyldbriar

HTH

good luck
Roni
- By Kash [gb] Date 22.03.06 09:57 UTC
Wyldbryars? :-)

Stacey x
- By Jess [gb] Date 22.03.06 15:58 UTC
We're not allowed to spell "wildbriars" different as its still too similar

We're waiting for them to get back to us about Silverbriars  - Thats our first choice, i think they said its available so just have to check theres none registered with it!  Will let you all know
- By Dawn-R Date 22.03.06 19:05 UTC
Careful peeps, remember CD member Wylanbriar, that word is her affix/kennel name. Personally, I would not like anyone to be too close to my affix/kennel name.

- By STARRYEYES Date 23.03.06 22:02 UTC
do you like it kay :)
- By beardiesokay [gb] Date 24.03.06 21:40 UTC

lol Kay
- By soozie [gb] Date 24.03.06 19:36 UTC
have you tried using an anagram of your real name plus adding your street name or something similar
- By calmstorm Date 27.03.06 03:40 UTC
remember when you choose your affix, the amount of letters in the affix are taken off the amount of letters max you are allowed to use with the puppies names. So if its a long affix, you get to only choose short names.
- By becky_2006 [gb] Date 27.03.06 12:45 UTC
my sister did the anagram of her first and middle names and got it straight away. mind you it wont make sense to anyone who doesnt know her name!!
- By Jess [gb] Date 31.03.06 16:46 UTC
Just to let you all know that we have been granted the kennel name 'silverbriar'.  So our Lab is now Silverbriars Nutmeg, doesn't sound so good but its ok lol

Just need to sort out the names of the others - One is only in my mum's name (is a joint kennel name) so have to change her ownership!  And we've not registered our pug at all as we've been waiting for the kennel name to be sorted!  my mum just wants to add 'silverbriar' to the end of their names, but i like 'at silverbriars' better (eg. Lab would be 'Lady Rowena silverbriar' or 'lady rowena at Silverbriars').  what does anyone think???
- By Missie Date 31.03.06 16:50 UTC
I like 'at' or 'for' I think it sounds better :)
- By rachelsetters Date 31.03.06 17:44 UTC
I agree 'at' or 'for' or 'of' is much better.
- By STARRYEYES Date 31.03.06 18:41 UTC
ditto rachelsetters
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.04.06 00:30 UTC
I think you will find that will be Siverbriar Nutmeg, as our KC dob't allow the 's,.

If we are taliking breed register unless you bred your girl or both her parents then the kennel name goes at the end of her present name.  I am a little confused though as KC registered dogs ahve to ahve a name with at least two words, so what is the rest Of Nutmeg's registered name, as you can't drop her existing affix.
