Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Wellbeloved or beta thats the question!!!!
- By animal1 [in] Date 29.03.06 21:12 UTC
Hi peoples!!! im currently feeding my golden retriever pup on James Wellbeloved, we started on bakers then changed to bakers complete for pups, then onto pedigree bum (which is exactly as ev1 describes), then onto James.... ive had no problems at all with this stuff and think its great!! the only thing is im unsure as to what is actually best for them, after meeting sum1 at my local park, they were using beta which is twice as cheap and i havent found many bad reports about it, same goes for the pets at home brand which i keep getting sales pitches evtime i go for my 'james pup food' saying its virtually the same, although, i could spend less for the same?? or i could spend more for the same, soooo confooosin. surely there has to be a major difference, im happy on what shes on at the minute but i think it would answer a lot of questions for many people if we could have some comments please:eek:

If your dog is doing well on it (JWB) then stick with it..........if it ain't broke don't fix it ;)
- By supervizsla Date 29.03.06 21:18 UTC
i personnally like the more natural foods like JWB or burns but the only way to know what suits your dog is to try it:)

one food will suit one dog and another another. - maybe do a months trial each and see how it goes.

If you use the search facility on any of the brands you mentions you will find a whole raft of comments, good and bad on them all :)  My personal advise would be having found something that suits your dog just stick with it.  All complete foods in the UK are made to strict regulations, are safe and contain everything for a balanced diet beyond that it is down to preference, your dog's and purse, your's :)

hey im happy:o))) just remember how hard it was for me to choose when i first got the lil bugger:o))
- By onetwothree [gb] Date 29.03.06 21:24 UTC
Out of the foods you mention, I think JWB is by far the best and as you have no problems with it, I'd stick with it.
- By animal1 [in] Date 29.03.06 21:28 UTC
it is a minefield though dont you agree? but hey, we plod on in hope we can be the very best owners:o), i'll have a look out for JWB, although 1 brand i did look into was iams and my first impression was a high class brand, although have since heard sooo many bad reports from various forum posts found from google searches....but then again its comes into play that whats right for 1 is not always right for another

When I got my Goldie, 16yrs ago, she was fed on a food called Omega (dunno if they still make it now) but it suited her, I was the one who thought she would get bored, and changed her food later in life, BIG mistake on  my part to mess around:rolleyes: Hence if your dog is happy and healthy........stick with it
- By Dawn-R Date 29.03.06 21:36 UTC
Yes Liberty, Omega is still around. Made by Purina, little rings if I remember rightly. :)

to be honest, i thought there would be more opinions in this area:eek:
- By supervizsla Date 30.03.06 17:24 UTC
many people have lots of opinions but if you look at this topic before it gets rather heated after a while.

but i think if you really want to spend less then do some trials but if you are perfectly happy with her condition and health then why change.

no one knows your dog as well as you so in the end it is your choice only. as i have said in the earlier post i prefer natural foods which show what exactly the ingredients are ie - james wellbeloved or burns. but foods suit different dogs which is why there is a market for so many dog foods. and really it is just trial and error

Have you used the search facility?  If you search each brand in turn you will find more opinions than you can shake a big stick at :D but one thing they will have in common there will be those for and those against but then more than a few who say its just down to the individual dog what does or doesn't suit so just try it and see.
- By LJS Date 30.03.06 20:09 UTC
How is that young 16 yr old getting on Libs :D

JWB is a good food and have fed my crew for a good few years without any issues part from the duck variety :eek:

We have only fed them one sack many moons ago and never again as it sent them loopy  Well more loopy than they normally are  :D

We now have givenm them the white fish variety and they are doing very well on it

As many have said stick with what suits as don't break what isn't broken ;

couldnt decide wether to add this post but ....

changed my girls onto JWB as they were becoming very fussy over Arden grange .
The food itself they loved it but I noticed one of my girl after about a week or so having toilet problems ie blood (my first thought was colic) she also  had a rash on her tummy plus bouts of bile before this I had no problems and she was healthy and fit .
I took her to the vet who put her on antibiotics and told me to change her food immediately .....I put her on a bland diet and decided to change her and my other girl onto Nutro the rash has gone no more sickness or blood in the p** .
Vets diagnosis food has irritated her bowel and stomach and came out as a rash vet also said that she has had problems before with JWB the change of diet worked wonders.
JWB I think is possibly suitable for some but not all.

Same goes for any dog food
- By animal1 [in] Date 31.03.06 17:35 UTC
well im all for wellbeloved peoples and dont intend changing her for cost at least, i didnt actually realise the difference between the cheaper and more expensive foods, like i said, pets at home keep tryin to upsell me on their brand saying its exactly the same virtually, just im not that nieve to think that theres no differences between them, the cost is almost double!!!....... thankyou for the 'web' raised eyebrow, it was noted and i send a 'stern' grin..... take it easy with cadbury's caramel- its only as forum

or 'its only a forum', memo; book training classes for doggy, book english classes for 'self' hehe

"i didnt actually realise the difference between the cheaper and more expensive foods"

It doesn't always follow that the more expensive a food is the better it is, nor the cheaper a food is the worse it is.  Take Purina Pro Plan for example - personally I'd rate JWB as the 'better' food but Purina is several pounds more expensive than the same size of JWB.  Also take Chappie as another example - that costs less than £4 for the same size bag as JWB but is a very good complete food.

IMO Pets At Home's own brand food is a 'good' food but not what would be classed as 'the best'.  However, the best food is different for every dog ;)

I used Beta, at first then introduced other brands as they got older, I think
you will find that they will choose the one they like, but like us they can get bored,
I then put a little tuna, or chicken, or sadines in oil, in with the complete.
A little fish keeps there coats in good condition.

I have used JW for the last 9 years and been very happy with it.  Often been tempted by advertising to try something new but then decided why fix it it it isn't broken. However, when my friend and I where at the pet food warehouse the girl behind the counter said that the Skinners rep had been in and said that the new Duck & Rice that they had out was exactly the same as JW.  My friend has a fairly strict budget so decided to try it.  She was very pleased with the condition of her dogs.  A couple of months later she noticed that the coats had a 'dandruff' in it.  She went to the Vets, had skin scrapings done etc. The Vet could find nothing wrong.  Then it dawned on her about the food. She tried a bag of JW and lo and behold, the dandruff went.  I am not for one moment saying that JW is the best, but you just have to feed what suits your own dog.  Hers just couldn't take the Skinners.  If your dog is good on what you feed them then great.  Mine are happy, in good condition and coats are good on JW, I won't be changing.
