Hi there just asking a question for my friend her friend has just brought a german shepard pup and the breeder made a big thing about it having Blue eyes is this normal if not what problems might accour from this.
thank you

I take it the GSD is white (it would be extremely rare for it not to be I could understand the big fuss) If it also has pink pads and nose it will be an Albino. I'm not experienced enough to know whether an albino would have any extra health issues to a normal black eyed white dog. (Shame your friend didn't look into this before purchase)

I think the blue eyes are seen as a fault rather than a blessing. But none the less it will be an extremely beautiful dog if for a pet. I can understand why she will have fallen for him/her she must look stunning.

an albino will have pink eyes and can suffer from sunburn and blindness. i think blue eyes on a white dog (or cat) can mean deafness

Well it certainly is a fault regarding the breed standard so I would hope the breeder was pointing this out and had reduced the normal price slightly as a result.

Though of course all baby pups have blue eyes, those that take longest to change are often too light, but they certainly should have changed by the age when they were ready to leave the breeder.

when i picked up all 3 of my gsd they had bright blue eyes but they changed to dark brown at about 12 to 14 weeks so they do change.

That is surprising as I expect ours to change a lot earlier :D

i no i just think it depends on the dog. my sister also has a gsd and when we picked him up at 6 weeks he already had dark eyes (dont no if it has anything to do with the colour of the dog )

I would imagine it would be dependent on the colur the adult dogs eyes, as most GSD's eyes woudl be unacceptably light if they were in my breed.  At six weeks blue eues would not be surprising, but in most peoples views pups of that age should still be with their Mums.

Hi

I am pretty sure my GSD had  light blue eyes when I got him at 7 weeks. And he know has the most beautiful dark brown ones.Cant remember when they changed though.

This got me thinking so i dug out my old puppy photos and sure enough my GSD pup had bluey eyes at 10 wks. His eyes darkened out to normal dark gsd colour. (matching his rich coat colour, not light-eyed)

My brother-in-laws dog has the most beautiful blue eyes! He is around 9 yrs old and is perfectly healthy! He is a lovely crossbreed, not sure what hes crossed with, think he's a true "heinz 57" but he is about sbt size and shape with a white coat with large black patches. I must admit I have never known a dog with blue eyes until I met him!

Weimaraners have blue eyes, which usually change to amber from 12 weeks to 2 years of age! Some (and its very occasional) stay blue, and in very exceptional cases they can be one blue and one amber.

The same can be said for huskies and collies etc
