Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Advice on walking Aids
- By jack29 [gb] Date 30.03.06 13:16 UTC
I feel as if i need to purchase some sort of walking aid.  I have a GSD that pulls like a train and i have been back to basic training more time than i care to admit!! The question i need answering is what is the difference between a gentle controller, gentle leader and a halti? and which one would you recommend?   Can i just add that when we are out he does bark at other dogs ( telling them to keep away)when on the lead and i feel i need more control over him, we are going to a training class so i am hoping this behaviour will stop and the walking aid will only be temporary.

There are loads of head halters designed for dogs

Halti
Gentle Leader
Gentle Controller
Pullstoppa
Canny Collar
Dogmatic
Leadtrain
Dogalter

to name but a few.

They all work on the same principle but some appear to suit some breeds better than others and some dogs do not get on with any of them, either because they are poorly fitted or they are professional pullers (so to speak).

Like food, everyone will have their preferences and swear by a particular make etc; sometimes you have to experiment but this is of course expensive, I have seen all of the above and do not think any one design is intrinsically better than any other but do think that some fit some head shapes better and suit the particular circumstances/environment/handler better.

Not sure if this is of any help whatsoever.........

The dogalter is good because it is padded and can be altered via velcro strips to ensure that you minimise the riding up into eyes issue and therefore be fairly "customised" to your dog.  It is marketed by George Grayson and is part of his Kumfi range, it is also marketed in different packaging by Hi-craft.
