Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Early season?
- By Debbie [gb] Date 03.08.02 08:32 UTC
When I got up this morning to let Lacey out, there is a really strong nasty smell about her that wasn't there last night, could it be that she is coming into season? Lacey (is as lots of people on here know) a Golden Retriever puppy, surely she is too young to have a season, she is not 18 weeks old yet. I hope my suspicions am wrong because we are going on 2 weeks holiday in a fortnights time. If she is coming into season will I have to cancel my holiday or will everything be OK by then? Surely she is too young yet, I was expecting this at about 6 months or so. If this smell is her season starting, can I give her something to get rid of the smell, or will I have to live with it?

I was unsure where to post this, so I am sorry if it is in the wrong place.

It's just possible Debbie but unlikely. Far more likely to be something she ate last night. I have known bitches come in season for the first time at anything from 4 months to 14 months but the bulk are between 6 and 12 months. Try wipeing her with a toilet tissue very shortly after she stands up after sleeping. Any discharge will then have drained down and will easily show on the tissue.

Regards, John

I think it is very unlikely that she is coming into season yet, much more likely to be something she ate. Also I have never noticed a smell with any of my bitches when they are in season so I don't think you will need to worry about that when she does come into season.

Thanks Joan. I have to say that the smell seems to have faded a bit now but when I had yorkshire terriers they had that same smell when they came into season which is why that came to mind. I had visions of not being able to take my holiday then and having to fight off neighbourhood dogs. I will be glad when I can get her speyed then my mind will be at rest and she will not have to go through all of that either.

Hi Debbie

Just a thought along totally different lines - it may just be "doggy bed smell" - does it need washing, especially if she has laid in it damp at all recently.

Another thing to check is that she is probably just finishing teething - check her mouth for infections/strangely angled puppy teeth

Have you checked her anal glands recently??? If they've been leaking through the night, the smell can be quite horrible. :(

No shes clean and healthy and is bathed regularly too, and her bed is always clean. I dont know what that was, but it has definately gone now thank goodness. I was really worried there for a while because as I said before it was the same smell my other dogs had when they were coming into season. It was a very distinct smell.

I think you have established that your girl is not in season. I have a lemon/ orange Roan Stud dog (not to be used with solid colours). This may be the colour that you required. Should you decide against breeding, i would be happy to keep you informed if any of my roans have puppies the colour you would love to have. All my Girls and Boys are vet checked and kc Reg & eye tested and are good specimens of the Cocker Spaniel breed. Temprament second to none, great with children, cats and other dogs.

Hi debbie,
the powers that be on here do not agree with mixing solid colours with parti. however, the kennel club will kc reg puppies from this mating and they will be FULL cocker spaniels. Similar to working cockers being bred to show stock, there is nothing in the kennel club that states that you cannot do either of these options. You may get what the powers that be term as mis matched colours, but if your not breeding for the show world then does it really matter. No doubt this posting will create a great deal of comments and interest... but there is nothing to say that you cannot do it.

well "I Have Spoken" Debbie has a Golden Retriever so if she did mate her and get a litter of Cockers she could KC reg it'd be something worth shouting about lol ;)

At least Debbie knows what will happen if she mixes the colours ... she'll end up with a totally different breed
