ok, i normally use lactol, this time i have decided to try whelpi, on the vets advice, however, ive got it home and the instructions to make up for a nursing bitch are clear as mud to me! i have been making uo what i think to be right, and my other half is saying its not enough, so we need to clarify what others do!!!

can anyone tell me how much powder they add to make up one pint? pretty please!?

thank you!

Hello, if i remember rightly it is one scoop per ounce of water, did you get a scoop with it.

to be honest I cannot remember how many scoop to one pint. but I think goats milk is much better to use, also it is fresher and cheaper.

when i got my bobby a couple of years ago , the lady i bought him from , also showed goats. she gave me goats milk as the pups were been given this regularily. she said she had been breeding dogs for over 50 years & always weaned them on this. when i got to the vets for injections & told him we were giving him goats milk, he sternly told us it was as bad as cows milk for dogs !! even though puppy was thriving & it didnt seem to do him any harm at all.

we have tried goats milk before, but the poor girl had major runs from it! so we decided same breed, not to attempt it again!

no there was no scoop in either of the 2 tubs we bought, one large ( bucket!) and a smaller pot!

never mind, will carry on as is and tell oh that im right! ;-)

Hi

Interested to know why the vet favours Whelpi to Lactol.

I have used both but using Lactol at the moment as it was easier to get. My bitch is drinking pints of it per day and looking super.

I know folk that use goats milk and had no ill effects. To be honest I had forgotten about it or I might of given it a try and also lambs milk. You can buy a sack for not a lot of money and it lasts for years.

I will stick to the Lactol for now as she is doing so well but just wondered if there was a reason the vet said use the other.

I always use goats milk on my bitches & the puppies later on with NO trouble ever. naturally, they need to get used to it as with any new food.

I thought the fat content was higher in Goats milk than cows milk? a friend used it on her Goldie and he loved it, looked great no ill effects. I gave some to my weims and got the runs ........ guess it depends on breed. I heard that ewes milk is the closest to dogs milk, so was a good one to use? can I be nosy and ask why you are using milk powder anyway?

meg wasnt producing much milk, vet recomended giving it, the easiest thing to produce/make milk is milk according to her, and so far it has worked!

i honestly have never used any milk supplements on mum just a complete puppy dry and alot of water
i did try a small amount on the last litter because they had to be weaned early but they ernt interested they just wanted the food and the water ( the water was more fun to splash around i guess)
although i have noticed alot of people do it on this board
my vet has never recommended anything but fresh water always be available

Hi there, I used goats milk for some of my 13 puppies and had no problem at all.  The puppies that had the goats milk caught up in size with the others and turned out to be fantastic looking puppies.  The vets will advize not to use it as they want u to buy their product.  I tried Whelpie and the pups wouldnt drink it.  Do remember to heat it like you would with as person.  I hope this helps......jo

I have deleted my first post as I didn't realise you were asking for amounts for your bitch and thought it was for your pups. I think it was 3 water to 1 powder for an adult, but I no longer have the Whelpi so can't say for sure. Whelpi was great for my pups I can certainly vouch for it, they are all big bouncy puppies.

But to be honest, once you have used the Whelpi I would go onto Goats milk and eggs, it works just as well, with the eggs it should not cause your bitch to have the runs.

2 x egg yolks (not the white) to one cup of goats milk.  My bitch loves it, and my pups thrived on it from 5 weeks old, it is as good as Whelpi.

Have personally used Lactol and Whelpi and not found a huge amount of difference between either. In terms of getting more milk into a bitch with a low milk output or a huge litter I would tend to increase her food, dozens of small feeds with fresh meat added to them and also give hre as much cows milk and water with glucose in as she will drink (with tons of trips into the garden!)
