My two year old dobermann wears a halti (which he has done since September 2005), he continually rubs it against my legs, he just hasn't got used to it.  When we walk along it drives me mad, he bashes his face against my knees.  Has anyone got any advice to help me with this.

Hi Debbie - I had the same experience using a halti, but when we changed to Gencons, we found that it this did work!

Look at this link http://www.naturaldogfoods.co.uk/

Hope this might help you.

Thanks Margot,

Anything rather than my knees keep being bruised.

Hi,

My dobe did the same with Haltis I found the Dogmatic headcollar much better as it didn't go into her eyes so didn't bother her the same.  Their website is www.dogmatic.co.uk

Margot, I had those Gencon head collars highly recommended to me at Crufts. I bought a dogmatic for my reprobate Tibetan Mastiff, but as I didn't know which size to get I tried it on his brother who was showing that day. I had a chorus of "take it back, they don't fit TM's" and sure enough they don't for some perverse reason and I did get a refund no problem. So one of the other TM people there explained to me he tried every head collar on the market and the only one that worked for their dog was the Gencon. He said there's nothing wrong with the dogmatic ones quality wise and they'd even remade the one he'd bought twice for him to try and make it fit, to no avail.

I have the monster on a halti at the moment that I've borrowed and he's very good on it, though he does try to roll and get it off if he thinks I'm not watching. I'm going to send off for a Gencon soon.

I use a Gencon on both my dogs and never looked back they adapted to it smashing

I tried the Gencon for my dobe -he backed out of it   because it leads from behind the head it slid straight over and off his nose ..I now use the dogmatic ....much better and far more secure ;)

I have tried all the different head collars and the cencon is much more fiddly to get on my Leo, my husband hates it.  We use the halti but he does sometimes rub his head and we even have the dog matic which is lovely and very well made i think this one is best for our boy.  You have to watch with the longer coats as i found the halti does loosen round the head.

I have ordered a dogmatic, so just waiting for it to be delivered.  I hope it helps my legs and my boy.  If it is more comfortable then hopefully he won't keeping rubbing his head against my legs.

mine used to continually rub with the halti on but now wears a dogmatic (best thing i have ever brought) and she no longer rubs :)

My dog uses his paw to try and pull it off when he gets the chance. He goes really slow then puts his head down like his sniffing then when the halti loosens he slips his paw, he doesn't manage to get ot off but it does make walking a little difficult when he decides to do it. Most of the time he will walk fine. Does anyone think any off the metioned would make a difference to this habbit?

Hi Louise123,

Does the halti ride into his eyes - if it does then yes one of the others mentioned probably will make a difference, as if it's uncomfortable that's probably why he's trying to get it off.  I have found the dogmatic brilliant, she no longer tries to do the occasional nose dive on the floor while walking to give her face a good rub :-)  Although if I have it on her and stop to chat to someone, I do sometimes get her nose shoved between my knees or thighs for her to have a quick rub :-)

Hi Karen, it doesn't seem to go in his eyes, it does when he sees another dog and gets super excited, then the whole thing just comes off!! I will keep an eye on it thanks.

Hi my dogmatic arrived and he does seem to be better with this and it doesn't ride up into his eyes.  He still rubs my legs but definitely not as much as before with the halti.  I'll keep going.

Hi phoebe,
I think that the dogmatic collar probably wouldn't have worked on your mastiff as they don't have a long nose  (forgive me if I am wrong!)
I have a dobe and manage to use the Dogmatic really successfully ( thanks to Huskygal :-D ) The dogmatic was made by people that own dobes,so probably having that dog in mind tends to fit perfectly!
Good luck with using the headcollar of your choice, it has made my walks with the buggy so much easier as they are no longer in competition lol !!

He has sort of a medium head - not narrow like a dobe's and not wide and short nosed like most mastiff breeds or a rott. I suppose this is why there are several different types of head collar on the market - some suit different dogs better than others. I was really looking forward to getting him a Dogmatic too as they are really well made, but sadly not to be. We're still on my friend's borrowed Halti at the moment but at least now he walks like a civilised dog rather than a lunging bronco!

Hi there,
I have a gsp who is a pain on the lead and bought a halti collar to help. Although he hated it and tried at every opportunity to get it off I found it definately made him walk better. He did the same and constantly banged into my legs. Although I perservered I have given up now as it actually cut the skin on his muzzle where it rubbed or he rubbed it.
Don't know if anyone else has found this???

Have had a canny collar for 2 days & so far very encouraging results. He has hardly rubbed at all & seems calmer when wearing it. Have had much more relaxed walks yesterday & today, my arm is still in the socket!

We gave up with a Halti as it kept pressing his teeth into his lips. He is a GR so has very loose soft lips and it was definitely making him uncomfortable.
