I have enquired at my local college about floristry courses as i eventually want to do it from home either full time or "on the side". I was just wondering, if there are any florists on here who can tell me if they enjoy it, is it hard work etc, can you make good profit from it??

I used to work in a florist, first job when I left school many moons ago. Its quite enjoyable especially making up arrangements. And the beautiful smell each morning when you went into work. I left to work in an office  only because the pay wasn't much (£10 per week whereas office work was £21.00) I bet its a lot more now though ;) :D

I used to work in a florists after school, ages 15 ... for ... £1.50/hr! Slave drivery. The only other downside was the freezing hands from changing the flower's water in winter ... ouch

oh yes the freezing fingers  I remember when it was really cold one winter, snow inches thick, and the water tap was in an out building - I cried cos I thought my fingers would snap off they were so cold. (I was 16 at the time)

some friends of mine ran a florists for 20 years but packed in  as so despondant. Te only thing keeping them float was fact they were in sidmouth.....aka gods waiting room.... and so plenty of funerals....however they got very fed up as all supermarkets, garages etc all selling bunches of flowers plus internet sales all helped close them down eventually. On wedding days they would be in their shop at 4am & valentines/mothersday nearly gave them nervous breakdowns:rolleyes:  Funerals were less stressful for them.
