I think the scotchgaurd in our (cream,!) carpets has taken one look at the Soggy muddy Husky, and packed Its little suitcase and left..to the distant strains of the 'Mission Impossible' theme tune!

Im looking at these hoovers that also wash..anyone had any experience of them?
I like the look of the Bissel one that heats the water (but the price is extortionate!) are they worth it?? do they work??
or..
should I just move house! :P

p.s. I am not good at housework.. so no fiddly ones!
- By Goldmali Date 27.03.06 13:35 UTC
I've had a Vax (well several different ones) for the past 15 years or so, they do an okay job and you cna ge one for £99 -but NOTHING beats getting rid of all carpets. Makes life SOOOO much easier, I don't know why it took me so many years to realise. :D When we move in to the new house the first thing we are going to do is rip out all carpets there too! (Followed by getting rid of all wallpaper as that is just as bad when you have cats.)
- By CherylS Date 27.03.06 13:41 UTC
Mission Impossible :D

Forget cleaning carpets just get laminates!

Actually have awful (well I don't like it) flotex stuff in kitchen and little bit of carpet in internal hallway area that dog managed to throw up on in 3 different places 2 weeks ago.  Was not amused as she threw up the raw egg I had given her (of course on the little bit of carpet, not on the laminates).  Now imagine trying to wash that out.  As the warm water was touching the egg so the white was solidifying

Anyway enough of my trials and tribulations.  My mum loaned me her Vax about 3 years ago and I hide it in the garage for such minging occasions.  It does get up the dirt, but it is hard work and after all that I don't think it is 100% effective. One good thing about it though is that it gets up the dog hair that the vacuum doesn't.
- By Lindsay Date 27.03.06 14:27 UTC
Re flooring etc you do have to be a bit careful re slippery floors esp. if you have pups, as the floors can do damage if the pups slip about too much on them...:)
- By HuskyGal Date 27.03.06 14:37 UTC

>she threw up the raw egg<

my little bits of Mud pale into insignificance against that cleaning nightmare!
Thanks both... a definate floor rethink will be in order when the piggy bank's full (and *whispers so OH cant hear* when Husky no's 2 & 3 arrive! ;) )
I think a basic Vax will be the way to go then, the Bissel looks great but is about £270  and I suspect it will only end up in the 'good idea-at the time-Graveyard for gadgets'-that is our outhouse!
:D

I wouldn't be without a Bissell :)  I hate laminate - sorry, no offence intended to anyone else.

I've been put off two-in-one vacuum/washers (read too many poor reports and have also tried one - rubbish :( ),  I did have the small Bissel which was fantastic for spot cleaning and heavy traffic areas but eventually got the large version with heater and I'd certainly say it's worth it's weight in gold - haven't found a stain yet it won't eliminate :)

HTH, Teri

>I hate laminate - sorry, no offence intended to anyone else.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. :)
- By Goldmali Date 27.03.06 15:11 UTC
I wouldn't use laminate either, but use thick lino that looks like wood -it's perfect. :)
- By CherylS Date 27.03.06 15:13 UTC

>I hate laminate - sorry, no offence intended to anyone else.

No offence taken, I hate carpet :P  OH gone right off laminate so might have future battles.  Hmm wonder who will win? ;)
- By Daisy [gb] Date 27.03.06 15:35 UTC
I hate laminate too :D Having said that, we've just put bamboo flooring (solid not laminate )down in our bathroom - looks excellent :)

We just have tiles in the kitchen and keep muddy dogs in there until they are dry/clean enough to be allowed into the carpeted areas :)

- By Lori Date 27.03.06 18:13 UTC
If you come back to this post Daisy, I want bamboo flooring for the entire ground floor. Is it less slippery than standard laminate?
- By Daisy [gb] Date 27.03.06 18:17 UTC
Don't know as I don't have any other similar flooring :D :D  It doesn't seem slippery, but then the bathroom isn't a large room and so walking around in there is limited. We're impressed so far, as it looks lovely and doesn't feel cold on the feet :)

Back to the drawing board then..piggy bank is now quaking!!
Thanks Terri..I may very well be tempted by the Bissell then as its worth it.
Is it fiddly?? Ive been reading reviews and heard horror stories of having to mix fluids/cleaning solutions and carpets being sticky.... Is it fairly easy? I'd just imagined you poured in your detergent and away you go?
- By Teri Date 27.03.06 15:29 UTC
Yep - dead simple - not had any sticky/tacky areas (after use :D ) - you can buy the regular shampoo or one with Scotchguard :)  I can't cope with fiddly :D  Have not used the tools for upholstery as ours is all leather .... maybe that part's fiddly, but shouldn't think so (goes to pin down Belgian ....)

One of the major electrical stores had the pro-heat on offer last month for £199  so worth shopping (or googling) around!

Regards, Teri
- By Val [gb] Date 27.03.06 15:37 UTC
I bought my Bissel Proheat for £100, supposedly reconditioned by the manufacturer, thought an add in a Saga Magazine.  I couldn't believe it was anything other than brand new when it arrived!  It's brilliant and I wouldn't be without it. :)
- By HuskyGal Date 27.03.06 15:43 UTC
Thanks Girls!!
well worth looking around then!
where would I be without all this wealth of experience on CD!
(...Stuck to the carpet I expect ;) )
- By Lori Date 27.03.06 18:11 UTC
I just bought a Vax deluxe (has the rotating brushes) and used it for the first time this weekend. It did a pretty good job considering the dye job my digging, pond loving, feather footed Goldie puppy has done on my pale green carpets. It will do until I get wood flooring. I got it as Costco for 50 quid cheaper than anywhere else.
- By MGR Date 27.03.06 18:19 UTC
Hey Husky,

Why don't you get your carpets professionaly cleaned, you do nothing, someone else does the job for you, they will come out looking and smelling like new, we live in E.Sussex and they charge approx £35 per room. Well worth it!! :-)
- By ali-t [gb] Date 28.03.06 20:51 UTC
MGR I can't believe what you get charged to clean your carpets   the man I get in to do mine costs £15 a carpet and he usually throws in a wee room or the stairs for free.  He even used to climb up 3 flights of stairs with all the heavy machinery and still not charge me extra. at £35 a carpet I hope you've got a small house
- By munkeemojo Date 27.03.06 20:29 UTC
i have the Vax Rapide XL and it's fab-the cleaning soltuion smells lovely too. My neighbour has a Bissel one, but its pants-she always nicks mine.

loves MGR's idea though. Perhaps theres a naked carpet cleaneing service  He'd better be careful when his hose goes though ;)
- By justlou Date 27.03.06 20:43 UTC
Olivia :-) You could rent the Rug Doctor for £13 a day (24 hours) from home base

It's a professional cleaner :-)

Hi
I,ve got the large size bissell thought I,d treat myself huh thats a laugh I,ve never had a look in since hubby retired eighteen months ago he,s taken it over  so I think it does a good job only I,ve never had the chance to work it yet.
Before you all start saying lucky you ...You should see what he does to the washing:rolleyes::rolleyes:
I have to hide best things from him or hey ho hey ho its into the washer and then the tumble dryer we go..
And all this time I thought I,d put on loads of weight and it turns out John is shrinking all my clothes. rolleyes::rolleyes:

- By newfiedreams Date 27.03.06 21:50 UTC

- By mdacey [gb] Date 27.03.06 22:00 UTC
The Rug Doctor is really good, have used it lots of times.
But, i think wooden/laminate flooring is much cleaner.
"i've had a smile on my face since the 25yr old hunky carpenter left', ;-)
- By newfiedreams Date 27.03.06 22:04 UTC
Ha Hummm...me thinks mdacey is a tad racey??? LOL

"young Maaaaaaan!!At your age! At our age!!" :D

The 'hire' a cleaner suggestions are great..thanks guys!
But I have to confess,Im attracted to the notion of buying one because Im a bit lazy when it comes to 'elbow grease' so I want one on hand all the time..and also If I'm being honest..poor old Storm and his muddy paws are the scapegoat ( sorry Boy!)...Its usually me and OH with our sloshing great glasses of Red Wine that cause that most mess!!! :D
*Hic*
- By newfiedreams Date 28.03.06 14:19 UTC
AHA, one step of the way to recovery is to acknowledge that you have a 'problem', so WTG HG, recovery is but another few meetings away!!! RFLAO :D :D :D
- By CherylS Date 28.03.06 14:20 UTC
Well that when you know you have a serious drink problem, when you keep missing your mouth :P :D
- By spellmaker [gb] Date 28.03.06 14:34 UTC
Hi Huskygal. you,ve managed to track me down then its a small world we,re not quite in Dalton where did you stable your horses?
You might not like my house at the moment grumpy old man who is obsessed with washing has decided to paint all things that do not move this week and me and the four legged girls MUST NOT get in the way:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Anyone want three lodgers for a week or two he,s driving us mad poor Sengi only wants to look in the paint pot not her fault dad left it on top of the step ladder, anyone ever seen a black and gold and plum crazy coloured German Shepherd  they look quite cute.
I feel an insurance claim and a nervous breakdown coming on:eek::eek::eek: HELP ME.
- By poppysmum [gb] Date 28.03.06 14:52 UTC
I have the standard bissell, and must be honest and say the pet hairs clog it up in no time. The heat pro {is that what its called? well the posh black one] is much better.

The rug dr that can be hired from alot of places [i get one from homebase] is absolutely fantastic! you can actually buy them too if you go to their website - but they are expensive. My family has thought about all chipping in to get one so we can all use it, they really do a great job.

The trouble with hiring a cleaner is that, sods law, as soon as u take it back to the shop, the dog will, without fail, drag muddy paws through, vomit, or something equally undesirable on the most visible area, so you have to hire it all over again
Let us know what you buy and how good it is

x
- By Lori Date 28.03.06 18:16 UTC
You are so right. My carpet was still drying when Milo escaped through the barrier and muddied the edge of the clean spot. That's why I bought one. It was that or buy a Lord's hire centre!
- By HuskyGal Date 28.03.06 18:33 UTC
  ...... ;) 'outed' by Newf and Chez!!! :D
- By misstyko [gb] Date 30.03.06 10:27 UTC
Well i can only recommend you get your carpets professionaly cleaned. !!!!!!!!!!!! HuskyG !! i have mine done by a hunk, every few months, he has been in the business 23 yrs ......MY OH !!!!!! LOL . :):):)
- By fatgazzer [gb] Date 30.03.06 20:58 UTC
hi husky gal i've got a bissel with a heater its great but a good tip is (i think) is after shampooing the carpet got over it again with the water setting this only takes a few minutes and removes the sticky soap residue so more time between cleans btw the attachment with the driven brush gets out most marks

i got a vax and cor the water soon turns black the only promblem is i have is no shops near me sell the liguid so need to keep ordreing it from vax there self
- By theemx [gb] Date 01.04.06 01:16 UTC
I use a vax - dont panic abotu buying Vax brand products for it, just make absolutely sure that you NEVER use something that foams, ie washing up liquid etc in it.as that will balls it all up.

For removing wee etc i usually use a solution of bio washing powder in the vax - doesnt foam so its fine.(and a LOT cheaper).

- By munkeemojo Date 01.04.06 11:14 UTC
i buy my vax cleaning solution from Tesco, tisha. I've seen it in ASDA too.
- By STARRYEYES Date 01.04.06 13:53 UTC
and B&Q too!

I have a vax rapide also I do it last thing at night then go to bed get up all dry and nice and clean!! ;)

of course dont quite know what my neighbour think !!!
- By roz [gb] Date 01.04.06 17:55 UTC
I confess to having got A Man In last time. Unfortunately, OH was in charge of booking him and probably the least exciting man in Sussex turned up.  So while the carpets were left as beautifully clean as possible in this pigsty, I was never tempted to ask whether I could fiddle with the controls on his equipment. ;)
- By misstyko [gb] Date 02.04.06 09:02 UTC
OOOH!! i wonder if my OH comes accross desperate housewives when he gets his machine out :D :D
- By roz [gb] Date 02.04.06 11:50 UTC
Er, I'd like to correct any suggestion that I'm a desperate housewife!!! :D

Not least because neither word exists in my personal vocabulary! But if you do to Get A Man In, it makes for so much more decorative an experience if they send you a toothsome one.
- By misstyko [gb] Date 02.04.06 12:05 UTC
LOL :D :)
- By denese [gb] Date 02.04.06 12:54 UTC
