- By ojoj1869 [gb] Date 26.03.06 10:05 UTC
recently took on rescue staffie 11 months old...saw vet last week for checkup and was advised to worm just incase even though history given by rehoming that dog had been wormed 2 months ago...
wormed yesterday morning 2 tablets drontal plus weighs 20 kg
this morning loose poo and had weed in kitchen overnight...
went into garden with dog and he kept eating long grass so obviously has tummyache...
kids tell dog was eating grass yesterday afternoon whilst in garden with them...
has anyone experience of drontal causing this....has been again in last hour very loose dark nearly black liquid putting my nursing hat on probably contains blood and has scoured him...
plan to not give anything to eat usually has breakfast, then thought all being well this evening to give some boiled rice and i am cooking lamb for tea so thought i might add a small amount of that too....thoughts...
he seems ok in himself maybe slightly quieter then usual but expected if got tummyache...

I usually starve for 24 hrs then boiled rice and chicken or fish .
I have had a similar problem after giving wormers it is a type of poison after all.
If he is fine in himself not lethargic or vomiting I would wait until tomorrow then give a bland diet.
Maybe next time ask vet to give a different wormer as he had bad reaction to drontal.

If overly concerned then give your emergency vet a ring for advice to put your mind at rest.

thanks for the reply...god i never worried about the other dog we had....maybe due to the fact this was my decision to get him rather then my OH and i therefore feel really responsible!!!..plus he is gorgeous!!!
any idea how long it takes food to pass through a dog stomach i.e from the time he ate the food to coming out the other end...????

I used 3 drontal wormers two days ago and have had no probs these are what we normally use and have never had any problems. It must just be different dogs stomachs.

louise did you use liquid or the drontal plus tablets....how old is your dog?

Drontal has a bad effect on our dog it gives him the runs for 24hours so this time our vet prescribed Panacur and it had no adverse affects at all. He did say that we should still give Drontal once a year though but still thinking about that.

hmmm not eaten anything all day and just had another poo dark liquid with bits of grass that he ate this morning....remains bright wanting something to eat....is this still normal or should i be worried....

As long as he is drinking... (very important)... put a little salt and sugar in his water.... he isnt lethargic or sickly I would starve him until tomorrow then maybe give the vet a ring. It may be best for him to be looked over as he is still a baby.
Sounds like a bad reaction to drontal I have a friend who can only give one type of flea treatment to her dog because of a bad reaction.

Better to be safe. :)

keep us posted .....hope he is better soon...

Hi Starryeyes!  You said your friend's dog had a bad reaction to flea treatment - I frontlined my 5month GR yesterday (I used the spray) and he worried me something stupid all last nite ... breathing heavy, very subdued etc.  He seems more himself this morning.  Last time I frontlined him he had a touch of diahorrea the next day but I thought it was a coincidence - now I'm sure its linked.  Can u let me know what your friend now uses?

Thanku :-)

Hi Til,
Not sure will have to see her  but in the mean time as it is prescription only I would tell the vet of your dogs reaction and he will change it accordingly ....

Ive used Drontal on tiny puppies with no adverse affects, starve for 24hrs, then boiled rice or hard boiled eggs with chicken or fish. Dont give red meat or milk until his guts are better. You can give him plain natural yoghurt which must be live (Yeo) which helps put the enzimes back in his gut. other wise go to the vet for anti biotics. Good luck.

Hi Tyler is a year and half and we have been giving him drontal tablets once every three months since we got him. He is a golden retriever but quite small so doesn't have a huge body weight. They did offer me some new tablets when i went for the last lot but can't remember what they were called. It was just one tablet as opposed to three.

Hi Louise

I may be wrong but I would suspect that you were offered the relatively new Drontal XL which is specifically designed for larger dogs.  The active ingredients are identical to those found in Drontal Plus but one tablet is sufficient for a 30kg dog (or possibly 35kg, I don't have a data sheet to hand!) which is less hassle for an owner than administering multiple tablets.

ojoj - It's quite normal for some wormers to upset some dogs' stomachs.  Blood in dog poo is not as serious as blood in human poo and as long as it clears up in the next couple of days, I wouldn't worry.

If it happens again next time you use Drontal, try another wormer - I would advise Milbemax as the next best thing to Drontal +.

well gave "bud" rice and chicken for breakfast..just waiting for the poo at least he managed to stay clean whilst i was at work this morning so things look promising...i,ll breathe a sigh of relief when he does a "normal poo"

Years ago one of my dogs reacted badly after worming, in her case is was throwing up.   The vet technician said that most of the times when dogs have a reaction it is because they had worms.  I suppose the worms can release toxins when they get zapped by the wormer and that's what causes problems.

I've always used Drontal + and haven't had any serious side effects although the edge does seem to be taken off his appetite the day after worming. He's not ill, nor "runny", just not fussed about meals for 24 hours.

My litter of puppies had a adverse reaction to drontal puppy, the mildest symptoms being as you described, to near fatal for one of the pups.
Previous litter was wormed the same with no problems, (one pup being the Dam of litter that had bad reaction).
All my adult dogs including Dam, Sire, Grandparents, Gr Grandparents, and so on of the litter have always been given Drontal (as puppies and adults) with no problems so why their progeny should react in this way was out of the blue, as advised (and not taking any chances) the puppies, now adults, are given Panacur with no problems, whilst all my others continue with Drontal, very strange!!

I was told, and I don't know if this is true but it's the advice I follow, that our breed has a tendency to react badly to Drontal + IF wormed with it below 16 wks old.  I was told to use Panacur on puppies up to that age, then switch to Drontal +.  Haven't had any problems, but obviously that doesn't prove or disprove anything.

thankfully after 48hrs buddy was back to his normal self....have since spoken with the vets who have said some dogs do have this response to Drontal plus, dont know why but have advised that buddy be wormed with different wormer next time....pity though they wont take back the 2nd lot of drontal tablets they gave me for his next dose!!!!

I have a small puppy who was given a dose of drontal puppy the next day he was in the vets with severe gastroenteritis. This was caused by the worms all dying and being released from the lining of the stomach/intestines. The vet said this left basically an open wound where ever a worm was attached. And because he had so many worms (2 giant poos that were nothing but worms) it caused a very bad reaction. He ended up on a drip and unable to eat for a week and once he came off the drip he still had to have liquid feeds for another 10 days.  There were 8 pups in that litter all took bad reactions and 2 died. They were a farmers pups and full of worms.  He has since been maintained on drontal puppy with no adverse effects.
I have 4 other dogs with no problems with drontal but are given melbemax once a year so the worms dont get resistant to the drontal.

Cheers
Julie

despite buddy having a reaction to drontal plus thankfully he didnt pass any worms that i could see so it just obviously gave him an upset tummy...not to be repeated will be using another wormer.
