It likes to dig :D
Yep - that's what doggies do, most dogs love to dig. :-) If you don't want random holes all over your garden maybe you could set aside an area where s/he's allowed to dig and if s/he starts digging else where re-direct to the allowed place, maybe bury a bone or something to get started in the right place. :-)

Yep, thats why I got slabbed! :P :P

I used to tell mine "no" when I saw her start digging the lawn so she dug the flower bed instead, nipping the foliage off some plants before digging up the roots. We gave up with flowers in the end. It was less stressful not to have any. As for the lawn, she doesn't dig that anymore but it's a proper mess where's she's made a mud trail and killed the grass off with wee.

Plants

Flower beds

I can hardly remember those :-D

Most dogs dig but some dogs were positively bred to dig! Which is why I can't work out why Nipper has been so slow to start "converting" my garden.

Today was so nice i ventured back in the garden again.. being that time of year. I've decided to rope off the area where i dont want to dog to dig, or wee.... or even walk on. I use green twine so it blends in a bit. I'm not really a flower/flowerbed person... but can be fanatical about my lawn.. lol.
Why? Because you pay them attention when they do? Because they're finding something rewarding under there?
If you don't want them to do it - how about making them their own 'digging pit' using kiddies play sand and get into the habit of burying small rewards and encouraging them to dig there - if the rewards are good enough, they'll prefer digging there to your lawn in the end.
BTW - are they terriers?

Speaking of digging pits, what do you all do about cat's using it as a toilet? I've been planning to build my dog a pit this spring but have been trying to think of ways to protect it from cats. I don't have any, but every dang cat in the neighborhood likes to leave presents in my garden and my dog loves to eat cat poo. I've thought of sliding cover designs and admit the complexity of the cover has made me procrastinate.
