at 3.50, This time with Gemma.
She has a lump just below her shoulder on her front right leg. The way i noticed it is the skin is coming off that area and she has been knawing it :( I am hopeing the lump is just inflamation due to her licking it, but why would the skin be coming off?? and why would she be licking it so much????
She will be 9 next saturday.
I think I am going to have to move into the vets :(

maybe ring worm that she is lick to much and made it a little more inflammed then it should be

what does it look like
- By Lea Date 18.03.06 14:43 UTC
A bit red, and the skin looks as if it is peeling off and is loose round the lump.
Sorry hard to explain.
It looks more red from sore than ring worm.

I think I am going to have to move into the vets

I feel excatly the same Lea, I've been taking my pup to the vets every other week for 6 months now (on-going treatment), all I can say is thank god for insurance :-)

Hope the lump is harmless :-)

I had squeezed it to see what it was. But nothing came out.
As soon as the vet touched it it burst. Just liquid and blood. Not smelly so caught it early.
She thinks she either got a nip from Beano or has got something in it or did have. There is a hard lump at the top of it that she is a bit concerned about but has given her anti biotic injection and anti biotics for a week and hope it goes down. She did say she didnt want to open her up. Have just got to keep it clean.
I just hope it sorts it out :)

When my Tuals was nine she devloped a raw warty growth on her pastern that she licked at.  It turned out to be a Plasmacytoma, and the age is typical of this malignant but slow growing tumour.

It was tested and then she had a secodn op to make sure they took enough tissue away.

Just checked Gemmas wound. The puss has gone but, Now I know what the vet was talking about
In her arm pit there is a solid mass where there shouldnt be anything, further back than the puss part.Hopefully  the infection started of deep and it is part of the infection that hasnt gone yet. The vet didnt tell me to keep an eye on it she just made a passing comment abouth there being a hard bit which she was a bit worried about!!!
now a bit worried myself :(

Don't forget, she'll have lymph nodes in the armpit - and the lymph nodes will swell when there is a local infection, as they are the body's first line of defence.   As the antibiotics take effect it should go down.

Try not to get too worried by it - obviously keep an eye on it though.

Didnt think of that. Although the lump os about the size of a 50 pence piece. Keeping everything crossed.

Well, Gemma has 1 day left of anti biotics, she had an injection then a 7 day course which I have been giving religously along with the rymadyl.
The pus has gone but the lump is still there and dont know if i am imagining it, I think it has grown. :(
It doesnt move, I can get my fingers behind it but it seems to be attatched to something (Like the bone if that makes sense)
She is eating fine, being herself. But this lump is worrying me.
anyone got any advice?????
i am seriously considering taking her back to the vets tommorrow afternoon. Think if the lump was an infection the antibiotics would have cleared it up by now.

Antibiotics can sterilise an infection site but fluid, pus etc still needs time to reabsorb unless it is opened, either accidentally or surgically, and drained.  Fixed, immobile lumps are a worry though I definately think you need follow up at the vets.
- By Lea Date 24.03.06 20:53 UTC
The Pus site seemed to be above the lump that is still there :(
The vet didnt tell me to go back if it hadnt cleared up, but she did say she was worried about the hard lump (Which I didnt feel until afterwards as I didnt like to delve around too much untill I had seen the vet)
Am i worrying too much???? Should i give it time to finish the antibiotics???? If I dont take her tomorrow I wont get to be able to take her until tuesday.
Oh and she has chipped the tip off her canine LOL
Bless her, she is 9 tomorrow.

Finish the course. I doubt much is going to happen between now and Tuesday so I would say leaving it till then shouldn't make any difference.
- By Lea Date 24.03.06 21:03 UTC
I know i am probably over reacting and the only thing that will happen between now and Tuesday is me worrying to death!!!!!!!! :( :(
In 9 years she has been to the vets about once a year for a routine checkup. Never been on anti biotics, never had any problems at all.
this is the first time i have ever had to worry about the health of her :(

Well,
More anti biotics, stronger this time. for 5 days.
He thinks its a callous from laying on hard floors (although she never lays directly on the floor because of her artheritis, There are beds every where LOL) She does favour laying on that side though.
He did say those sort of callouses are more found in great dane size dogs.
He said if it doesnt clear with the anti biotics just keep an eye on it.
If it stays them same size dont worry but take her back in if it gets any bigger.
so now going to be keeping my fingers crossed LOL

Well a week after I finished the last dose of antibiotics the lump feels as if it is nearly gone :D :D :D
There is still a bit of what I would class as a residue there but it is all but gone.
Will now keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt come back.
Thankyou for everyones help and kind words :)
