Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / stud fees
- By radarears [gb] Date 21.03.06 14:37 UTC
what is the usual stud fee for a dog which is not proven and hasnt sired any puppies? Is it usually less than a normal stud fee or is it just the same? Do you refund the persons money if the mating doesnt work and there are no puppies?
- By Val [gb] Date 21.03.06 14:40 UTC
Nothing.  When I have used an unproven stud I've paid nothing until healthy pups have been born.

Have you read the first post on the breeding forum about using your dog at stud and seen what responsibilities it brings with it as well as the money?
- By radarears [gb] Date 21.03.06 14:41 UTC
yes it was an interesting read, thanks.
so should the first mating be free then? what happens if the bitch has a lot of puppies, should the bitch owner give you the money once the puppies have ben born?
I appreciate you taking the time to help me, thanks.

i think that it might be breed specific. In my breed you wouldnt expect to pay a stud fee from any stud until you had the litter on the ground. However this is not the norm I know as when I have mated the terriers i have always paid for the service, up front, regardless of whether the sire was prove or not. Suggest you enquire within your breed as to what the norm is.

- By kao kate [in] Date 21.03.06 16:32 UTC
in my breed the price of a puppy BUT not payablen until healthy puppies are born.

Radarears - you've already been advised that your pup is NOT an acceptable colour, however often you call it "rare" - so the stud fee is considerably less than would be the stud fee for a dog that does not have bat ears, wrong colouration and has not been shown or health tested!

I also have knowlege that some of the dogs through the sire's side are terrible examples of the breed, over height, light eyes, very untidy ears, very poor looking staffies,no health screening etc.
There is no way i would even consider using a dog with those faults.

If this person is a troll why not delete the whole thread?

Is it left up so other members can play and write smart remarks knowing the OP can not reply?

Sorry i just dont get it.

Just to clarify, Michelle, 'cos I'm a little confused by the faces you have chosen :), you are just having a larf, yes?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.03.06 10:30 UTC Edited 23.03.06 10:33 UTC
Of course she is! Michelle's clever enough to realise that 'collie' and 'trollie' simply rhyme - especially appropriate in the context of these posters! ;) :D
- By michelled [gb] Date 23.03.06 10:56 UTC
just funny cross!
but still cross :)
BCs are above humour like that y'know!
- By michelled [gb] Date 23.03.06 10:57 UTC
:confused:collie  dosent actually really rhyme with troll-ie though,more with a supermarket trolley!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.03.06 11:34 UTC
 Trollie and trolley are pronounced exactly the same, aren't they? When you consider that the dog breed used to be spelled 'colley' ...

'Troll' is pronounced the same as 'doll', not 'mole' ... ;)
- By michelled [gb] Date 23.03.06 11:38 UTC
i would say troll-lee,when refering to a troll in a cutsey way & a trolley when down at tescos.
i think trolley @ tescos rhymes with collie & colley better than TROLL-LEE.
(lol-jmo though...sticking up for my breed like we do!in a pendantic way)

I think thought they were still posting?

Ofcourse there is some useful information in such threads, so that why they aren't deleted I suppose.

Ooop!!
I'm in the doghouse :( but Im begging at the backdoor! :)

Just to point out my post above was meant to jokey (hence the sticky out tongue smiley)
And wasnt meant to imply the poster who commented that people who are banned cannot comment, was someone who'd been banned.. :(
appologies if anyone else read it that way! It was meant to be read more like a mickey take of myself (what a goodie goodie *tongue in cheek* type thing!)

What is the form if a bitch did not get pregnant? is it a free return, or is part of the stud fee returned, or does it all depend on the stud dog owner? Does the stud dog owner have to have a sperm count on the dog each year to see if potent? I ask this, because i wonder what the situation would be if, say, 4 people took bitches to a dog, they didnt get pregnant, but they did at the next season by a different dog?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.03.06 08:16 UTC
The usual procedure if the bitch misses is for there to be a repeat mating (or two or three) at the next season, provided both dog and bitch are in the same ownership. If stud dog owners want sperm counts done that's up to them - that would only prove his fertility at the time the sample was taken, and sperm counts can rise or fall depending on the dogs health, and even the weather! An unusual heatwave (to which the dog isn't used) can cause overheating and reduced fertility.

If several bitches missed to the same dog his owner would almost certainly have him tested.
- By calmstorm Date 23.03.06 09:39 UTC
Thanks jeangenie.....didnt realise the weather affected sperm counts! I wondered regarding the financial aspect what the form is? I know with horses it used to be (not sure now) no foal free return, or no foal no fee, but usually with a non refundable grooms fee attached. Just wondered how this works with dogs, I have read in a book somewhere one pays for the service, not a litter of puppies, and wondered if this is so, and also how the actual price of the stud fee is judged? is it based on the price of a puppy in the breed, or the dogs success rate in ring/working/his progeny winning in show/working? Its something I'v often wondered about, for no reason other than curiosity.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.03.06 10:34 UTC Edited 23.03.06 10:37 UTC
I think it depends on the breed.  In  my own breed it is the price of a puppy regardless of which dog is used, or whether he is proven or not.

In other breeds I ahve heard of widely differing stud fees, often a lot lower than the price of a puppy, so with these often free returns aren't offered, as the fee is for the time and trouble of stud owner and dog.

As most breeders in my breed know each other well it has tended to become the norm for the stud fee being paid after the litter is born, at which time the stud owner signs the registration form after receiveing payment.

Some people take a £50 non refundable deposit at the time of mating, and if no pups there is a free return.

Now that the Kennel club are going to do online registrations where the stud owner does not need to sign it may be that it will revert to the traditional payment at service, except for maiden dogs.
