Had some news tonight that our 10yo GSD probably has CDRM.
Over last 2 months has got progressively wobbly in back end, uncoordinated, difficulty in getting up stairs in cars etc.
Just wanted some personal experiences with this condition.
Internet reading makes for very grim reading....
how do you know when enough is enough...
2 months ago max was running about like a thing possessed....such a rapid decline....

That's a difficult one and very sad - sorry to hear about your dog :(
One of my GSD's had this condition. It seems to get bad and then stabilise for a while. His front end would go in the direction he wanted to go and the back end would have a mind of it's own

I kept him to grassed areas to minimise the damage to his paws from his toes knuckling under and scraping and I had that grey foam pipe lagging stuff on all the doorways and garden steps, sharp edges etc.. to protect him. He used to clatter his hips a lot going through doorways when his back end swung out.
In himself though he was cheerful, playful and full of beans. About two years after diagnosis I lost him to something else :(
I always think you know your dog and his disposition best so you'll know when enough is enough. My dog coped with this condition very well considering he was an extremely active dog before he got it.
im sorry to hear that .
our gsd shaddow is 9 and has it awell :( . have u been given rymidill yet?
hes really bad on his legs , we have to pick him up sometimes :( , i know what a horrible desease it is :(
we have put down carpet and built him ramps .
does ur gsd have accedents? :(
thats another part of it :( we have a squedual for shadow , hes let out nearly every 1 and a half a hour :( .
i think the thing is that makes the desease so sad is that the front end of them is still a puppy :(
stick in there ;) , just make sure hes always happy and he'll be fine .if you havent been subscribed rimadil i would ask for it as it DEFENATLY keeps shadow out of pain.

There is no pain with DM; it's neurological, degeneration of the spinal cord. Rimadyl is an anti-inflammatory - it won't help with DM.

Sorry to hear about your dog ojoj1869.
I have no experience with this desease, so I can not offer you any advice I am afraid :-(
But I did come across this site which offers practical advice for dealing with CDRM, I thought you might find it helfull.

So sorry to hear about Max ,I lost my beloved Aysha to the same complaint.
The other posters have already given you same advice I would the only thing I would add is if its any comfort to you your boy won,t be in physical pain .
The hardest part of al is watching them as they still think they can do everything but you will know when your lads had enough you,ll be able to tell by his expression Shepherds can always let you know when things are not right.
Lots of love to you and your boy.

Just to point out that OP is over 5 months old.
:)
thanks for all the lovely replies...sadly we had max pts at home on the 27th feb....the week prior he was having increasing difficulty in getting up and had started to mess himself whilst laying down without being able to do anything about it....
it was time to let him go with some dignity...remembering the dog he was....not the dog he was becoming....
RIP max our beautiful boy...bestest friend....we all miss you and wish you were still here....never forgotten...xxx
CDRM is a horrible disease though the dog is not in pain the progressive paralysis of the spine is crippling.....it is likened to mutilple sclerosis in humans...
we travelled far and wide to find a puppy whose parents had A1 hips and had all the necessary health checks only for max to be stuck by something that is undetectable until they develope it, no cure....and only really diagnosed on post mortem...diagnosed only on symptoms...has put us off having anymore GSD....
So sorry to hear your news, they are sent to love us and be loved even though they break our hearts in the process.
Hope you are in some way coming to terms with your loss maybe in time you will have another shepherd they are very hard to live without when you are used to having them around.
My freind lost her girl to the same awful complaint yesterday.
thinking of you
love Sharon.
spellmaker please send my kind regards to your friend....heartbreaking thing to go through when up top they are still like puppies but are able to control the back end...
we hated the house without the company of a dog having had previous to max 2 rottweillers...one died pts due to old age 14 years and had a bitch pts aged 10 due to cancer in her foreleg so the house has always been busy with dogs...we had all three for a short while!!!!
so we acquired a new dog on saturday, never to replace max.......a rescue sbt aged 11 months....he is great with the kids and is like having another child in the house.....i,d forgotten how much fun it was....
some may think it was far too soon but each to their own .... we wanted a dog in the house and decided to give a rescue one a second chance...we did see a couple of GSD pups-rescues but couldnt go there after what happened to max...and have always fancied sbt.

Cheryl, I'm not being funny, just asking, why did you put the OP is over 5 months old??? Cheers, Dawn
