hi all, just a quick question about my girl, she's now on day 65 from first mating and 63 from second but is showing no signs of having these pups, how long do i leave her and is there anything i can give her to 'start her off'. this is her first litter and we have been told that she has definately 1 pup although i think i've seen more moving.
any info would be great thanks

Can't help I'm afraid my bitch put me out of misery and was early :-D Thought I'd reply anyway to see how she's getting on. Is she like a barrel :-)

Latest any of mine have gone is day 65, she had 8 pups, I shouldn't worry just yet.

If she is only having 1 pup,she may need an injection from the vet.
Single pups dont produce enough hormones to kick start labour.
My girls breeder has had litters born on day 70 from first mating though so she might still go herself.

Not quite true. I've had 2 litters of single pups with no problem at all, apart from my numb b*m sitting and waiting for more pups! :)

Sorry,I should have said sometimes single pups dont produce enough hormones to kick start labour.
As long as she is not in distress and has no sign of labour dont worry too much. however if she has a geen discharge that is a sure sign somthing is wrong and get to the vets quick. first signs she is starting is she will be off her food, her spine will be pronouced and she will want to evacuate her bowels until theres nothing but mucus passed. of course these are only a guide as Ive been caught out with an early litter. GOOD LUCK and keep your eyes on her.

hi, no she's not distressed in any way (i am though) she's still her usual bouncy self, her vulva is quite puffy, she has got a discharge but its mucus definately not green or smelly, she was off her food sunday morning and again yesterday morning but then ate her breakfast by lunch time anyway (both days), as for poo's she been going regular but doing 2 poo's at a time yesterday and this morning. i'll let you guys know when it all starts, just can't stop watching her i think its becomming obsessive. every little movement, her breathing, everything!!!!!!!!!
thanks for your replys

Me again, I know people who have had their bitches go a week over, did you count the day after mating as day 1? It also depends what day of her season she was mated, and when she actually ovulated, did you buy abook which will tell what to expect? There is something called inertia, which if there a lot of puppies and a lot of fluid the uterus is not able to contract. perhaps if nothing has happened by morning you shpuld get her checked over at vets, who will be able to tell you if she has started to dilate.

hi,
well i think she's started, she's been digging her bed up for 3 days now, shivering all day yesterday, the newspaper in her box yesterday morning was wet but didn't smell like wee, i thought she had stopped this morning but now she's shivering, panting and winging and even more bed messing. do you think i've got puppies on the way ???????
thanks jjr

Definitely now keep a watch for her straining, shouldn't be too long now......good luck!

hi, she's been staining since 9am how long should i expect her to strain for?????
jjr

As long as she seems OK and there's been no bag or pup yet I wouldn't worry, especially if there's only one. Any signs of her being really unhappy contact your vet.
Fingers crossed that all goes OK for you both.

If she hasn't produced the watrbag yet then up to two hours from when she started straining, after that any more than an hour with straining I would contact the vet.

how will i know if she's got more?????

My girls won't 'normally' settle down with their pups until they have finished.......but that's not always the way, once I had a girl settle for 3 hours with her litter when we thought she had finished (vet confirmed she had finished too) when she stood up and produced another.
Just keep an eye on her, she will pant for a while now anyway after delivering, but watch for more contractions.

hi, has anyone had a mum cry when her puppy does ??????
thanks jjr

the pup should be mostly feeding and quietlky skleeping with just th odd cry if it falls off a teat. check it is latching on properly. If it is crying excessively Mum will be anxious and cry as she doesn't know what to do.

Sometimes a singleton pup will get too much to eact and it's tummy be so bloated that it is uncomfortable, but I would think it a bit early for that yet.
