Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Milk, how to increase

does anyone have any hints on what they have used that might work to increase the milk supply in a bitch that whelped 3 days ago?  She has a litter of 7. Pups are gaining but could use more weight.  They aren't crying and seem very content but her mammaries are not very large.  Any suggestions? could they just be sucking all of the milk out and the increase hasn't come yet?   Usually I see the milk supply in by 3 days.
Any suggestions?

it is very possible they are suckling the majority of her milk which isnt a bad thing because the more they take out of her the more fresh milk she produces. I would only worry if she did not seem well and the pups where not content

I had a bitch that whelped a litter of 8 and sadly she didn't get ANY milk, my vet tried everything even resorted to Homeopathic remedies, but still nothing, I ended up hand rearing the litter.

As long as she has milk and pups are gaining I would say everything is ok, they are 3 days old now, sometimes the bitches milk will come in thick and fast a bit later.

It sounds as if she is producing enough milk for the puppies. If she had too much it will cause problems like mastitis.

Some bitches never get big , mine don't and the all feed their puppies well.

I would rather not see them large and full and you then have to keep feeding the pups off the fullest to prevent any problems.

If the pups are content then she is doing a good job.

Hi there, when my bitch had puppies (13) I was worried as hell as to how she was gonna cope and was the milk supply going to be enough.  I was told by a friend to give her as much as she wanted and she loved raw mince, couldnt get enough of it, hence her milk supply was better.  I still had to feed 2 of the puppies myself which I used goats milk from tescos, hope this helps........Jo

I havn't experencied it in a bitch!
But! in humans, you must have plenty of fluid, also enough to eat,
I would imagine it is similar. The more they drink the more is made.
If they are content, and there tummies are nice and pouched, they
must be getting enough.
I wouldn't worry to much.
