I have a couple of questions. I would like to see if my bitch would whelp naturally after her first litter of only two turned into a c section. She is pregnant with 7 . she is 63 days from the first breeding and 59 from the last. she was bred 3 times. No signs of labor yet. no temp drop etc. Have any of you heard of or experienced a ruptured uterus in trying a natural birth after a section.
I also have a friend that is wondering if she should try a natural whelping but this bitch has had two sections for various reasons. have you heard of anyone delivering after two sections and then a natural delivery..
I don't have much experience with c sections. mine all usually are whelped naturally.
We are both show/breeders. I've just been hearing a bit about ruptured uterus and becoming a little paranoid :-)

What was the cause of the C-section first time?

I've had litters after one C section. I wouldn't do another on a dog that's had two ! The ones that I have bred had natural births the second time round. Just before anyone says anything this is not with my Spanish Water Dogs :d
the first time she only had two pups and after the water broke there were drips of very dark like blood I guess so I took her in for the section because I wouldn't be able to reach the doctor after that. She may have been ok but i couldn't take the chance
why would anyone breed from a dog who has already had two c sections? or is that a dum question

Its not a dumb question, it was immediately what went through my head. It could be 'breed' related. Certainly you would be both a fool and a callous breeder to mate a dog of my breed (Labrador) again after two sections. The ONLY possible path in this if such a course of action has been taken in error or through ignorance would be to book a planned C-Section.
Maybe this is common practise in poor whelping breeds who have sections almost as a matter of course with most pregnancies. I can only shudder at the thought of us creating and developing such a breed, but I imagine there has to be amongst the poor whelping breeds due to physical exaggerations.
In 13 litters of Labradors in 15 years I can say that the one Section I did have resulted in a ruptured uterus through shoddy section proceedure by a inexperienced vet. I immediately spayed the bitch when she had recovered. I can see that a small section which went well and the bitch recovered quickly, maybe just to get a last puppy out in a large litter, or some such harmless similar reason might result in someone wishing to mate their bitch again and I do know of several breeders of the larger framed dogs (I know little of toy breeds) who, when faced with a reasonable sized litter (between 5 and 8) have had a natural whelping after a small section on the previous litter.

Labs are easy whelpers in comparison to some of the toy breeds. I guess she had two very large puppies both times. That's all I know.
