Topic Dog Boards / Health / Have I been ripped off by vet????
- By aboladeras [gb] Date 20.03.06 11:09 UTC
Hi,

We got our dog vaccinated againts the rabies a few weeks ago as we want to get the PET passport. The vet charged us 65 quid and today he charged us 80 quid to take a blood sample which needs to be sent to a lab somewhere in the country. That totals 145 quid. Have I been ripped off? I guess that my anger will drift away somehow if I am told that people are charged a similar amount of money for the same treatment so please write!

Best,

Alex

Hi Alex

It is unfortunately around £200 for the Pet Passport even here in the North West, so I think you might have a good deal!  Most of it is for the 2 seconds it takes for them to fill in the forms!!!

They nearly get as much money as solicitors :d :d  Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Mmmmmmm I'm glad to hear that we haven't been ripped off! Yeah, I completely agree with your remark about solicitors! In Catalunya we say: "Advocats i Procuradors a l'infern de dos en dos" which means something like "Lawyers and Court Agents go to hell in pairs". :D I guess that, since I stopped being a solicitor, this remark no longer applies to me

Take care,

Alex

My puppies PP cost £125 including the rabies, blood test & microchipping
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.03.06 12:39 UTC
When I had the PET Travel scheme requirements done in 2001 it worked out £250 per dog.

I ahve found over the last few years that the Rabies vaccination has got cheaper, but the other bits probably haven't.

Thanks to all who have bothered to reply!!

By the way: the vet said that the 6-month period started to count from the date on which the blood sample has been taken. However, I think I read somewhere that actually what matters is the date on which the lab sends the results of the blood test (provided, of course, that these are negative) which can be several weeks later. Can anyone clarify this?

Thanks!

Straight from my puppies info sheet that came with his blood test results

"Your pet may not re-enter the UK until 6 calendar months has elapsed from the date the blood sample, which led to a satisfactory result, was taken."

Edited to add your vet is correct ;)

My puppy was vaccinated on 27/9/5 & blood tested on 25/10/5 so he could return to the UK from 25/4/6 if I take him abroad

Any queries that you may have you could speak to Janet as she's had dealings with the PP.
- By aboladeras [gb] Date 20.03.06 14:15 UTC
Thanks Moonmaiden,

So since Ricardo's blood sample was taken today we'd be allowed to re-enter the UK on the 20th of September 2006!!! (this looks like "Sesame Street"!!). :D
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 20.03.06 14:28 UTC
Ricardo now is it?  :d :d

Hopefully, everything crossed that the blood test will be OK!  Janet had to have Pardo done twice!!

Just think if you trained him you could show him in Spain, if he's as nice as he was as a puppy I think a number of people would like him over there!
- By aboladeras [gb] Date 20.03.06 14:54 UTC
I'll send you a pic of him so tha you can judge by yourself!!
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 20.03.06 15:06 UTC
I look forward to it :d
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 20.03.06 19:56 UTC
Thanks for the photo's he's gorgeous, spitting image of his mum!!
- By jennyb59 [gb] Date 20.03.06 21:30 UTC
:cool:I want to see him too please.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 21.03.06 23:08 UTC
I thought that he was the spitting image of his mum but Lynn says that she can see Lastar in him too!  He looks a real chunky monkey, but it's his eyes that were the killer :d Soooo funny!
- By aboladeras [gb] Date 22.03.06 14:05 UTC
Just wait to see him in "dogson" (as Janet said). I can't wait to see you all in Kegworth! And i can't wait to see how's he gonna be on the "chopping table" :D :D
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 22.03.06 14:57 UTC
I don't think that we will do him on the "chopping table"  We will find a quiet spot in the room whilst Janet is slaughtering, I mean, Clipping Pardo as we don't want it to be too much of an ordeal for him.  What I'll do is a bit here and there as he has to get used to the sound of the blades also (actually I can do that as part of my demonstration), but don't worry by the end of the day you'll hopefully have the finished article :d

We need to take it steadily for his first time.
- By aboladeras [gb] Date 22.03.06 15:18 UTC
Perhaps I can contribute with the clipping machine I use for myself!!!! :D    :D    :D   :D It's a really old fashioned type of thing but it works!!!
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 22.03.06 15:27 UTC
Oh and I thought that was your natural hairstyle :d :d

Seeing that you get such practice in you should be great at doing it next time round !!
- By newfiedreams Date 21.03.06 22:29 UTC
Hi just to add, for my PP I paid...Vaccine...£29, Blood Test...£97, then to cap it all they charged me £34.50 for EACH DOG to fill out the forms! So for 2 dogs it was £321!! BARGAIN! LOL As if!
- By Moonmaiden Date 21.03.06 22:35 UTC
£97 for the blood test bl**dy h*ll !!!!!!!!!

For me it was vaccine £50
Blood test £ 50
Micro chip-£15 approx
Blood sampling £10
Passport Zilch

Total £125
- By newfiedreams Date 21.03.06 22:48 UTC
Yep I know!! They were already microchipped too! I nearly fainted when I was told I would HAVE to turn up with both the dogs to get the PP issued...ermm...why???? They KNOW my dogs for goodness sake, NO-ONE in Liverpool has dogs like me!! They said it was to prevent fraud, then charged me £69 for the priviledge...AHHH NOW I UNDERSTAND!! That's the fraud bit! LOL My friend in Birmingham paid only half of that...it would be worth my while travelling somewhere to get them done. Mind you, at another Vet now, they quoted the same price for the Blood tests! I was asking about getting the Yorkies done! DONE??? Ohh that reminds me...I was !!!
- By Moonmaiden Date 21.03.06 22:56 UTC
LOL I just picked mine up ! Mine you theyy did cock up the description There's no way Rjj has a long coat  You would think the vet would have remembered as she also has a smooth BC like doh !

Ive just got the info from my vet for P.Passport as follows

Micro chipping £25.22, cost me £15.00 from the company that supplies them.

Rabies vacc  £43.22 if given at the same time as routine jabs £24.86, why such a big difference ????

Blood test 30 days after £85.26

P.Passport £42.46

Cerification of tick & wormer admin on each occassion plus the cost of meds  £28.31

so total cost £224.47 plus the cost of tick and wormer, thats what I call a rip off.
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 22.03.06 11:55 UTC
Jenny I enquired with my vets when it first came in and they were quoting £250 then, I dread to find out what they'd be charging now, although it was in posh Cheshire, now I'm with a vet in South Manchester wonder if he'd be cheaper?? :d
- By Moonmaiden Date 22.03.06 12:00 UTC
 My vets must be fairly cheap I wonder why the blood test was so expensive £30 + over my vets ? Maybe it's the lab charges

At least the only maintenance for the PP is the rabies jab every couple of years

BTW my vets do the blood test after 28 days !
