Usually from between 9 and 11 months they tend to start sort of stradling things they wish to pee on. They start to make clumsy attempts to sort of walk off as they are weeing to begin with, just taking a bigger step with that rear leg that will lift later on.... They are *usually* lifting fairly consistantly, unless desperate for the loo, in which case the still revert to straddling and weeing, at about a year of age. But of course they all vary a bit from this, smaller dogs seem to mature more quickly than larger ones.... two old rescue boys I have very rarely lift their legs ever and both were castrated young, at about 8 months of age...

One of mine started cocking his leg at 5 months, and his litter brother waited till he was 7 months. :)

Bailey, (Irish Setter) now almost 10 years old was 13 months before he started to cock his leg.

My dobe started at around 6 months I think. However, in the garden 9 times out of 10 he'll still squat. Always cocks his leg when off lead on walks apart from if we're playing fetch then he can't be bothered to go and find a tree so he'll squat and wee in the middle of doing the retrieve :D

Anton was about 10 months old but now he has competitions with Lastar on who can lift theirs the highest, and they both wee in a bucket outside :d

One of my last litters of pups two of the boys were cocking at 6 weeks !!

Nips made a clumsy attempt to cock his leg at 3 months but was an expert by five and a half months. Since when every tree, blade of grass, fence and lamp post within a 10 mile radius has needed watering.

My BC started to cock his leg when he was 10mths old.  Now he is 1 year old he cocks his leg at every available opportunity...Wish he's stop cocking his leg against my car wheel though!!!

I may be wrong here but I think smaller dogs do it younger, only speaking from my own experience.  My JRT started properly at 4 months old, and my CKCS at 5 months wheras larger breed males I've had have been between 10 months and 14 months.

Henry (CKCS) started around 6 or 7 months, I think, George (Yankee) still doesn't always do it at 4 years old!
