Hi,
I was wondering, is it possible for a bitch to be pregnant with few symptoms? My bloodhound was bred at the right time in her cycle (blood test) by AI with sperm at over 80% motility. An ultrasound at 24 days showed no pups. Her only real symptoms are that she's more cuddly, her back end is still puffy and her nipples are standing proud. She is thicker in the middle but not so someone not eyeing her keenly would say she's pregnant. LOL She was bred on the 21st of Jan and today is the 18th of Mar so she's only a week from being due. As you can tell, this is my first breeding. Is it possible there's one little puppy hiding in there? I just have a feeling. I am terrified she'll pop one out when I am not looking. LOL
Also, I don't know if this is related, but she has started humping my male like mad. Is that a sign of false pregnancy?
Many Thanks

it could possibly be a phantom but she could be pregnant too
those scans arnt 100% and alot of people have been told they wernt expecting pups and then out pup a large litter of pups.
can you feel any movement or anything?

You could try using a stethoscope ;) if there's only a week to go you should be able to hear any heartbeats if there is a pup/pups ;) I found a stethoscope very accurate, I was able to count the different heartbeats, they sound like ticking watches ;) You can find info on using a stethoscope on the site below :)

Nope, can't feel anything, but these guys are apparently notorious for hiding pups up under their ribs. I think I'll take her in for a professional grope on Monday.

My girl was scanned on day 26 from first mating, day 24 from second and we saw 2 possibly 3 pups, but my vet said they were only at the implanting stage, so possibly more. So definitely saw pups, he said a day earlier and we may not have seen them, so there is a slim chance you girl is pregnant.

hi, we had a scan on day 28 and that showed nothing, we went back when she would've been 7 weeks and was told by the vet that by feeling her she wasn't pregnant but she offered me a free scan and that showed definately 1 puppy i am sure however that i've felt 2 puppies inside her moving in the past few days. she is now on day 62 from first mating day 60 from second mating, my girl showed few symptoms, she was only sick once, didn't go off her food at all (untill today) she still has a waist line so from the top you wouldn't be able to tell if she was pregnant, she's got a slight mucus discharge which i was told is a good sign.
anyway good luck and keep us informed

Almost certainly she is having a phantom pregnancy - however, absolutely as you say, this can also easily be a small litter.
About 10 years ago I have a bitch who was mated on day 10, when her two previous litters concieved on days 15/16/17 sort of a period. It was a brief token slip mating but, however, I was taking a couple of youngsters to have their hips prelim'd so got her ultrasounded at the same place. The radiographer was extremely experienced and extremely thorough, however, as I had expected, the young lady in question was empty.
She came out picking up and worked 8 drives hard on saturday, then saturday night started nesting. I picked up a diary and worked it back and that would have been day 61 from day of mating. I dismissed it as bad hormonal symptoms of a phantom, because the symptoms can be VERY convincing, and sure enough, just to prove me wrong, about 30 minutes panting and one good push and one huge puppy was born about an hour after the start of her nesting behaviour.
Puppy was fine, mum was distressed having had 7 and 9 previously over the previous 3 years and she was CONVINCED i'd hidden the rest of the little beasties! ;-) But after a day or two settled well and raised her singlet suprise pup!
So therefore I do certainly know for sure that an empty scan does not definately mean no puppies so keep your eyes pealed round about day 58 onwards for any serious signs of prewhelping behaviour and do not dismiss the whole thing entirely until 5 to 7 days after she SHOULD have whelped..... just incase ;-)

ill just let you know of someone i know whos girl had a phantom. They were positive she was pregnant her she gained weight she has milk and when it was the due date she was acting as if she was in labour and even dropped a heap of clear mucus and a small amount of blood anyway they ended up taking her to the vets (because of the blood) they xrayed her and found no pups and no reason for the blood. So the reason im telling you this is a phantom can be very very close to the real thing if you are really worried you can try an xray
