Topic Dog Boards / General / Buying a dog from a pet shop?

I have been looking for a Chow Chow for months and haven't been able to find any pups! The only one I did find is from a pet shop. Is it good to buy a puppy from a pet shop because I heard that most of them come from puppy farms?

no dont get a pup from a pet shop- its exactly the same as getting one from a puppy farm.

if you cant source good chow chow pups then dont get a chow at all. maybe think and research different breeds that are well bred near you if travelling is an issue.

how come you want a chow chow? is it your first dog? what other breeds have you taken a liking to?

You should have no trouble finding a reputable breeder of chows if you contact the breed club, not sure what the annual registraion figures are, but if there are no pups currently then get yoru name on a waiting list.

Never ever buy from a dealer/pet shop, as the breeders of such pups have no interest in the breeds, pups or your welfare.

If you Search this site you should be able to find the breed clubs listed, failing that go to the Kennel club website, click breed standartrds, then utility, then chow and at the bottom are the contacts for the various breed clubs.

My advice would be to stear clear of pet shops selling dogs - they tend to be imported from Ireland or from puppy farms over here.  They aren't from parents who have had all the relevant health tests for the breed or are necessarily of good temperament.  People who get pups from puppy farms or through pet shops tend to end up with a pup with both health and temperament problems :(  Telephone the breed club (NATIONAL CHOW CHOW CLUB. Sec. Ms J Lefevre Tel No 01277 373609) and ask for contact details for your local Puppy Register and also the Breed Rescue.  The Breed Rescue doesn't mean just abandoned/ill-treated dogs - many, of various ages are given up for 'legitimate' reasons :)

As you've had chows in the past, you will know how wonderful they are:  the waiting will make one even more wonderful.   I'm afraid that if you do succumb to temptation and buy one from a pet shop, all you will be buying is heartache.    Good breeders have lists :  bad breeders ship their crops to petshops :(

Get on a breeder's list - I'm certain that it will be the right way for you.

Margot

i agree dont ever buy from a pet shop imo they should ban this activity! Only buy from a reputable breeder you may have to wait but it will be worth it in the long run!

never ever ever buy a pup from a pet shop, in my opinion pet shops should be for the sale of food ,health items and pet accesories not live animals. You wont be able to view even one parent, you wont know if everything they are telling you is true and the majority of pups from pet shops are sickly when bought or become sickly with in the first few days.

search for a breed club atleast that way you can have actual have contact with the owner of mother and possibly father you will know the lines. In Australia im not sure if it is the same in the UK but you cant get papers from a pet shop the pups are never registered if you use a breeder the pups if you choose the right breeder will come registered and with all papers.
