just taken on a sbt rescue used to cats and kids....great little dog...
have a cat in the house who has been used to GSD and Rotts...but obviously new dog...and new dog to cat.....
they have seen eachother and we had stand off from the cat with body and tail like a bottle brush and whining at the dog ....sbt on the lead just wanted to get over to the cat...tail wagging...
its the dog first day....
thinking of putting the dog on the lead and just letting the cat wander in if she will....and move on from there....
the dog is only 11 months but has lived with cats before we got him....
any suggestions...

The main thing is to not leave them unsupervised together for a while, and to make sure the cat always has an escape route. For instance use baby gates which the cat can jump or squeeze through, but the dog can't get past. Good luck! (I have 8 dogs and 25 cats, LOL.)

baby gates are a good idea.
also have you thought of putting the animals in seperate,
rooms to get thier smell in there and then swapping them over?
just to get them familiar with each other's scent.
hope they get on ok. if the are used to other cats ands dogs,
im sure they'll end up best of friends.

we have a cats upstairs - dogs downstairs rule. It means the cat always has somewhere to go where she wont be hassled. My cat has seen dogs come and go regularly as i foster for rescues however as long as she has her own space she is fine.
Like Goldmali says - dont let them be together on their own for quite a while yet. I trust my cavvie with the cat as he is terrified of her and is small enough i know wont stand on her and hurt her, she is definately the boss but still ikes to escape upstairs when she's fed up with his pestering.

He loves nothing better than to sit on the worktop in the kitchen deliberately winding them both up :)

They are both very good with him but when he is down on the floor, Stink (5 months old) can be a bit overbearing for him so we have a safety gate on the stairs so Kitty (aka sh**tty,as other half likes to call him) can have the full run of upstairs without them bothering him.
He still likes to spend time downstairs with us and the girls only bother him for about 10 mins and if he doesn't run off they get bored.:)

So as the others suggested a safety gate is a good idea for when they are alone.

Also while you are there I would just let your dog sniff your cat out for him/herself as cats are quick and if he/she doesn't like your dog or they are to overbearing for it ,it will just make a sharp exit.
