Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Taking Sick Dogs to a Show

Please excuse me if I have a rant, but I feel I have just cause.

Last december we went to LKA, during a quick trip over to one of the stands complete with dogs, we came upon someone mopping the floor, it was obvious that a dog had vomited and it was being cleared up.  We avoided the main area, but on reflection realise that we must have picked up some on either our shoes or the dogs feet.

Four days later I had a houseful of very sick dogs, including a litter of 4 week old pups, all vomiting and severe diarrohea.  So much so that we had to take the pups to the vet at 2 in the morning as they had explosive diarrohea which was ruby red and they were dehydrating.

We managed with lots of medication to save them and all the adults, we thought we were out of the woods.

Not so, the Monday before Crufts I was getting my little bitch ready for the Friday and was gobsmacked to see that she had developed severe jaundice, took her straight to the vets, where she had numerous tests, to be told that she appeared to have liver failure.

After more and more te4sts they have come to the conclusion that the virus in
december attacked her liver and has slowly destroyed it, she has severe anaemia and since last Thrusday has gone down to a blood count of 14 which should be around the 50 mark.

It is with a sad heart that we have made the decision to let her go to the bridge tomorrow morning.  She is 2 years old, a winning show dog, with a heart of gold, and so much more life to live, she doesn't deserve this sort of end.

All because some selfish individual decided that a bl**dy place at a Champ Show was worth more than the health of other dogs at the show.

Roll on the day that we revert to health checks for dogs arriving at the shows.

Please please think and then think again, if your dog shows any signs of illness and then leave it at home.

OMG - I am so, so sorry to hear this Jayne. Your poor girl :(

Is there no chance of her pulling through or has her liver been damaged too greatly? One of mine had severe anaemia as a young pup (blood count of 18 and dropping) but thankfully their liver was okay and they pulled through. Thinking of you at this awful time :(

I really can't understand the mentality of some people, WHY would they take a sick dog to a show?? They are just putting every one else at risk! :(

So sorry to hear about your girl. Sadly there are some people who only care about winning and don't give the poor dogs health a second thought. Everyone knows themselves what it feels like to be poorly, imagine being dragged around a ring just for the sake of winning a ribbon!

Jayne

No words can ease what you're going through right now.  I cannot understand the total selfishness of people.  No show and no prize is worth a dogs' life.

My heart goes out to you.  Any of us that show all know it's a case of "there but for the grace of god go I".  You have made the hardest decision of all and, for what it's worth, we all know it's the right one.  It's the last thing any of us can do for the dogs we love so much.

I'm so very very sorry.

This is so awful for you and somthing that could have been avoided had the other dogs owners had an ounce of responsibilty in their heads.

No words can help but you have my greatest sympathies.

How very very sad.  I can only hope that the owners were unaware at the time they left for the show that their dog was ill.

Oh Jayne - how dreadful for you all.   I'm so sorry to read it - you are obviously all devastated and nothing we can say can make any difference.

We're all thinking of you all - there but for the Grace of God go any of us who were at LKA.  {{{hugs}}}

Sorry to hear your terrible news, I am so sad for you!!  At crufts 2 years ago, another exhibitor of Neos had a dog with watery, bloody diahorrea dripping out its back end, it eventually threw up near the ring. It was clearly sick, the stupid owner then wiped up its mess before dragging it into the ring. The owner made me so angry, the dog did not have a choice, she did. Some exhibitors dont give a stuff about you, your dog and sometimes their own dog, all for the sake of a rosette.   be comforted that you cared for and loved your dog all its life, even though a short one. She knew more love than lots of poor dogs ever get in a life time,

god bless you!!!!!
