i do carry a doner card and my brother gives blood regularly (i really should go and give blood!!! just never got round to it) he is also on the bone marrow register.  he doesnt, however carry a doner card. he says if he was guaranteed that his organs would go to those who through no fault of their own needed new organs he would, but he is against the idea of people who have inflicted it on themselves getting his organs, like alchoholics, drug users etc.  i dont know wether i agree with him or not?

i have to say that it is an entirely personal choice and if he doesnt want them donated then i wouldnt do it.  i wouldnt make someone feel guilty about their chioce to donate or not, its their body after all.

Obviously if one of my relatives expressed a wish to be a donor then I'd have to oblige but if it wasn't clear about what their wishes were then, I wouldn't give my permission.  Some of my relelatives said they didn't care whether they were donors or not, so I guess if it came to it and the doctors asked those unsure relatives wouldn't be donors.  I think it would be wrong to have an opt out system where you automatically get harvested if you don't unsubscribe, but i do think that if you do put your name down the fact that you are on that list should be the final decision and no other permission needs to be sought especially from relatives who are totally distraught.

I would not like to see an opt out system either.  Sad though it is that some receipients will miss out I don't think you could have a situation where organs were harvested if there was any possibility at all that the donor did not wish it.  The key word is "donor", meaning to me that it is a gift freely given, a gift cannot be taken.  It is very personal and I think it should remain so and certainly when the Government has considered it in the past they came to the same conclusion.
