Topic Other Boards / Foo / rented property-bond question

My husband has been offered a promotion at work and the package is too good to refuse. The thing is we would have to relocate to another area. At the moment we are looking into selling our house and going into rented accomodation.  I just wandered if anyone can tell me how we would stand with regards to our dog.  I have heard that some tenants have to pay a seperate bond for their animals.  Has anyone come across this or know what the procedures would likely to be?.

Hi Michelle,
Im not up on the Estate Agents procedures,but I can tell you (if it helps) my experience;
I had to rent 2 years ago for 6 months (similar circs to you) we had 1cat and 1 dog.We were asked to give £50 pounds on top of our deposit to cover the possibility that we would leave a flea infestation (:eek: huh!!) the money was held for a month after we moved out and were given our deposit back til the Agents/Landlord were happy we had not left any little biters behind ;)
   We were also intructed we had to pay for professional cleaning of carpets and upholstery, which I had thought you had to do anyway..so we were happy to do this. And our £50 was returned to us a month after moving out. :)
  I did actually send vets receipts of flea control to estate agents but they told me this was not nesc as they were happy all was in order.
  Also the house we decided to rent after looking at quite a few (it had the best garden) turned out to be one that was 'No pets' but the estate Agent was brilliant and said that becuase we both had good jobs (My OH at time was a policeman as well, so seen as a good prospect as a tenant I guess!!) he was happy to approach the landlord for us and see if he would reconsider. And luckily he did drop the 'no pets' criteria for us :)
So it pays to ask around too.
Good luck with it :D
And congrats to your OH! :D

I would look around now for new housing, because there are very few landlords that will accept pets these days. a friend had this problem when their house was selling faster than the small holding they were taking over, and they thought they would have to rent short term. A search of the agents found very little joy with anyone that actually accept pets at all. We are talking a single dog here, older and well trained, and my friend being home all day. Circs didnt matter, the pet ban (dogs, cats, birds, anything) was total.

Property owners do get a little hysterical at the word "pet", however, I saw a lovely advert when I was looking on the internet for a holiday cottage to rent.  It said "Pets very welcome.  Children considered by arrangement only" :D

I hope you get something sorted out.  I used to rent a flat out and pets were fine - it was the tenants that caused the problems :eek:
