Topic Dog Boards / Health / How much is excessive water consumption?
- By issysmum [gb] Date 31.07.02 10:32 UTC
Holly gets fed 6oz (150g) of Nutro a day over two meals and drinks approx 3pints of water between 6am and 9.30pm (she doesn't have water overnight because she sits in it and knocks her bowl over).

My parents Cocker is in for investigations at the vets because she drinks 2 pints of water a day and their vet considers that to be excessive.

Should I be concerned about the amount of water Holly drinks or does it vary depending on the brand of complete food that the dog eats (Ebony is fed on Eukanuba) as well as the individual dog?

Thanks,

Fiona

Fiona, I wouldn't worry to much about water intake. All dogs are different and as long as there isn't a drastic change one way or another in their water intake, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. All my dogs have different drinking habits, just get to know roughly what she takes in and then you will spot of there is a major change. Don't forget to allow for season changes too. :-)

That's what I thought :) Ebony has always drunk about 2pints of water a day but the vet has decided that this is excessive and she needs further tests doing.

Dad only took her for a checkup after her infection.

Fiona

I don't think two pints a day is excessive - my boys go through more than twice that amount. Cockers "waste" a lot of water by soaking it up in their ears and shaking it all around. Sounds to me like this vet is on the make - unless there are other signs such as excessive weeing and the such like.

lol@Pam .... not just cockers :D Bears ears are permanent shammy leathers.

The bracco italiano is known as an aquaholic. Infact breeder have to warn their prospective puppy owners about the bracco water intake, before they rush them off to the vets for all sorts of tests to determine, what is infact a very natural trait in the breed

LOL Leigh. Bit different from deerhounds then - breeders warn new owners that deerhound puppies generally believe they are water soluble :-)

Fiona, maybe the vet thought Ebony's infection might be related to her water intake? I was talking to my vet about this last night when I had Finn up for his second vacc. Finn is like a small thirsty steam engine when it comes to water intake, but given his good condition and normal results on testing his urine the vet is happy that he's just 'a drinker'. My adults vary enormously in how much they drink - you rarely see Madame La P., Mel or Wee Flea drink water, but Lewis consumes vast quantities (and then like to dry his beard on a human :-)). If you are worried about Holly, get some Multistix from your vet or the chemist and test the output.

Hi Sharon, Kloud is just the same as Finn with the water. Must be something in the genes :D

Phil, hadn't thought of it before, but we ought to compare ear tattoos as Kloud & Finn might be related. Finn's is DHO H763

I used to worry that mine drank too much when I had them on kibble as I would fill up a large bucket, generally three times in two days for two dogs. Since I changed their diet I have to make a point of changing the water as I could leave it down for days and they don't finish it (unless it is as hot as it has been the last couple of days).

I think they vary considerably with diet and weather (unless of course you own an aquaholic dog and I do know one Dobe version of this)

Hahahahaha....... Who on earth could own a Dobe who LIKES water I wonder :p ;)???

The Mockodile!?!?!?

This is the Dobe that when coming back muddy from a walk was a little reluctant to get into the water and be washed but I lifted him in and we sluiced him down - as he was quite relaxed about it I said "sit" he did and we washed his back. Just out of curiosity I asked him to lie down - he DID! - laying as flat as as he could and drinking at the same time.

On last visit here he dashed outside and I mentioned to Beth that I had not seen him have a drink - huh! stuck his face in the large square storage box I use as a water bowl - up to his ears just to drink. Put one front foot in, then the other and when Beth told him "time to go home" instead of stepping back and walking round it he walked through it.

This is also the dog that had our local policeman in stitches when he found the only puddle on the playing field and lay down in it - frequently!!

Not a normal Dobe at all

<shaking her head>
