Hi all, newbie here.

I had a Gordon setter that I showed around 10 years ago and am now looking around for a new Gordon Setter puppy, but thought I'd ask any resident Gordon Setter "experts" opinions on which lines are currently showing successfully.

When I was showing before it was mainly lyric, wallbank & inkersall that appeared to be walking away with most awards.  We went to crufts at the weekend and watched the GS classes and a few caught my eye, but I didnt want to go approaching the owners/breeders on probably one of their most important show days of the year to ask questions, so I just sat back and watched!

I'm guessing the waiting list for Gordon puppies in general is going to be quite lengthy but am willing to wait a while.

So just some general advice really, can't wait to get a Gordon again!  If anyone wants to talk "Gordon" away from the forums, feel free to PM me.

Thanks!

When I read your topic title Daz, in my mind it put another slant on "raining cats & dogs" .....visions of loads of Gordon setters drifting earthwards, carrying Mary Poppins-type umbrellas :D

Seriously, welcome to CD - there'll be loads along to talk Setter talk.

Yep, now you mention it , I can see what you mean!!!!  Maybe some people will look at the thread title and think I am a salesman for some special type of Doggy bathroom shower!!!
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 09:22 UTC
What breed to you have now?  could be wrong but think it's Flatcoats?

So sad when you can't get back to a very loved breed when your heart is broken isn't it?

The grooming is timely but not so bad if you keep on top of it!

Awww, so sorry to hear about your Gordon :(  I know what you mean about going back to the breed - I had a Border Collie (called Ally) who I adored and he died suddenly in the front garden - he was around 4 years old when he died, and as much as I love Border Collies, I dont think I could have one again - just looking at their eyes is enough to set me off, just makes me think of Ally!

Hi - will pm you - I currently show a 2 year old Gordon, 7 month and in July will have another puppy in the ring.  Will be happy to talk Gordons anytime!

Liric and Wallbank are still around - the waiting lists are not too huge but depends on when breeding.  I got into Gordons in 2004 so quite recent for me but have always had Irish and English - my English bitch died of cancer in 2003 and at that time we too could not get another English so we looked at Gordons purely for a pet and got bitten by the showing but in 2004.  Max was at Crufts this year having qualified at most of the champ shows we attended in 2005 - it was a fab day and loved every minute.

I will be happy to talk lines - limited experience but can tell you who are doing well in the ring at this time and give you details of the Gordon Association and Gordon Setter Club secretaries in order you can see who has puppies/planning puppies - I know of a few planned this year too.

Thought I was right - did you recently judge Gordons at Ardingly too?  Sorry really being curious now!

4 Flatcoats - they must keep you pretty busy - love the SWD's too - a lady at ringcraft has them.
- By jennyb59 [gb] Date 15.03.06 14:01 UTC

Oooh, yes Rachel she did recently judge at Ardingley.
- By jennyb59 [gb] Date 15.03.06 16:09 UTC
Oy you No3, just respect No1 here, and to think I used to think you were so quiet and unassuming, after reading all the emails about you on all fours, I think I have changed my mind, hee hee
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 17:10 UTC
Thanks for confirming that it was the Affix that I thought I had recognised!

And Jenny is a lovely lady!!!  Said in the loosest of terms of course!! :)

- By Daz Date 15.03.06 18:21 UTC
I most probably saw you at Crufts at the weekend then, was hanging around by the Gordons for most of the day!  Did you see the Italian gordons?  I thought they were great movers.

Thanks for the info, now going to reply to your PM!
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 18:37 UTC
My boy was the one in Yearling with a short tail - so very noticeable - had an injury and had to have some amputated!  He said hello to most of the people round the ring!

I love the Italian's but would have given it to the veteran (he is only 7 though) as thought he was moving better!  but hey! a lovely dog (and it's grandad to one of mine!) got the BOB!

Will check my messages!
- By Daz Date 15.03.06 18:54 UTC
Awww no, I wouldnt have seen that class, we watched the first three then went for a look round at Discover Dogs then came back just in time for Open Dog.  Re Veteran - was that SH CH Tebekah Bachelor Boy?  Thought he was a lovely dog!

Daz
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 21:09 UTC
Yes that was who I was referring to - a close decision - some lovely dogs in the final line up for the CC!

Hope you enjoyed your day looking at some many gordons!
- By ice_queen Date 15.03.06 16:17 UTC
IHaven't got much advice about Gordons themselves but good luck in your search :)  I would love a Gordon, they are my second fave setter (red and whites being my first) but my Mum won't let me as they are too mad! :D  I did do some training with one when he was a puppy as the owner asked me to run him for her at afew shows and he was just a horror but I loved him! :D

Hope you have fun!
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 17:14 UTC
Maybe we should swap sometime as a trial Rox!!!

Rox really Gordons are no madder than any of the setters - honest !  :-D and I have to say far less challenging than the English Setters (my Charlie is adorable but certainly loves to try his luck out and about! - my previous English was exactly the same!!!)
- By ice_queen Date 15.03.06 17:31 UTC
With my experiance of Chance the Gordon... :D and Rona (owners next one) was just as bad! :D

Red and whites are the calmest of the setters though :)  so everything else is mad! :D

Hey forget wife swap...lets have breed swap! :D
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 18:13 UTC
:-D Could start a new thing couldn't we!
- By ClaireyS Date 15.03.06 18:20 UTC
now I heard that red and whites were the scattiest of all setters
- By ice_queen Date 15.03.06 18:35 UTC
I've heard Irish are the scatttiest!

I guess at the end of the day it depends on the individual dog :D
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 18:42 UTC
Let's be honest they are all slightly crazy but then we wouldn't love them like we do would we! :)
- By briedog [gb] Date 15.03.06 19:44 UTC
yes it was me judging.

where is your ring craft with a swd
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 21:07 UTC

- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 22:19 UTC
Yes sorry it is in Sussex (should have said that really! :)) - she has a cream (shoot me if that should read white!) bitch and a young pup Archie from a recent litter but think she has a brown bitch too - her name is Jenny (Calling Jenny - help!!)

Glad you had a good day - a very busy day for you with labs too - good turn out from the Gordons wasn't it!

My boy was the one with the recent amputated (from damage) tail.
- By briedog [gb] Date 16.03.06 07:51 UTC
well arcie is still cousin to my pup jenny use my gollie borther on her bitch.

- By rachelsetters Date 16.03.06 09:09 UTC
Archie is adorable!  He loves his mummy Jenny!
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 16.03.06 13:43 UTC
Archie is adorable :d  I bred his daddy and I still have his fit, young looking, nearly 13 year old grandma at home :d :d

Glad to see that Archie's got a little bit more get up and go than his daddy!!

Jenny, I don't know what you are talking about me being on all fours   I think someone else typed those e-mails to have a go at me :d :d   Right I'm keeping quiet now, I'm a good girl I am!
- By Daz Date 15.03.06 18:55 UTC
Yep, my Gordon was mad most of the time too, but nowhere near as mad as our Border Collie was!
- By LucyD [gb] Date 15.03.06 19:33 UTC
I love all the setters, would have liked one when we first researched breeds but decided they were a bit big while going through the 'mad' stage! Ended up with Cavaliers - just as mad and even more gorgeous!! :-)
- By Setters4me [gb] Date 15.03.06 20:12 UTC
My parents 1st Setter (20 years ago) was a Gordon, he certainly was loopy as a fruit cake, all he wanted to do was run everywhere and we had so much trouble getting weight on him. 2 years later we got our 1st English Setter and I have stuck with them ever since. They have their mad moments (what dogs don't!) but soon settle down afterwards. I have a friend with Irish who are not your typical stereotypical Irish, they are quite chilled. It depends on what type/strain you go for. I would always have another Gordon again though (if we had space!) they are a gorgeous, mushy breed!! Ours was a Lourdace and they are still going strong now. Good luck with your search though!!
- By ClaireyS Date 15.03.06 22:03 UTC
I think you get out what you put in, mine can be slightly dappy, and when out in the field they run non stop, but they do what they are bred for - hunt out pheasants etc (although they only occasionally point) In the house they are well behaved, they dont climb the walls because I give them enough mental and physical stimulation, but they love to play and they love company, they are intelligent and you can teach them alot, ive just got back from agility with Fagan and he is picking that up really quickly.  And to make my point about being slightly dappy at the moment one is rolling on his back with a yogurt pot in his mouth making happy growly noises and the other is laying there watching him with a "what on earth are you up to  " look on his face

I think they are great, would have loved a gordon but was put off by the amount they slobber
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 22:12 UTC
Claire - I have to agree on the Irish being very intelligient (in fact I think all of the setters are - big myth they are stupid!) - I did Agility and Obedience with my old gal and she still remembers all the commands although bit stiff to do agility the mind is willing but the body unable!! :-D

And yes they will be hyper if not giving the stimulation - like all gundogs I think!

P.S. None of my gordon boys slobber!! Do come and see Max and Hamish again soon!  When are you next at Ardingly - are you there next Thursday? If anyone slobbers it's my Irish girl who out on a walk gets a lovely large bit hanging down and will come and wipe it on your leg if you aren't careful!  (not very ladylike is it!)

Is the yoghurt pot still in one piece?
- By ClaireyS Date 15.03.06 22:21 UTC
do they not? i was warned by a gordon breeder that they really slobber bad? but then i was told by a Irish breeder that irish dont Fagan doesnt but Alf does big time !!!!  im not at ardingly thursday im training for a new job and doing exams so didnt really want to take time off I think my next general show is one in essex next sunday then the following weekend we are at chippenham

the yogurt pot is now in pieces all over the floor both dogs crashed out !  sorry about the lack of punctuation ive done something to my keyboard
- By rachelsetters Date 16.03.06 09:14 UTC
won't see you for a while then Claire! :(

I guess some do some don't  (slobber) but none of my boys do!  Lucky I guess!

Good luck with your exams!
- By rachelsetters Date 15.03.06 22:14 UTC
Let's see Sarah how many English and baby on the way - surely you can squeeze a Gordon in! :)
- By Setters4me [gb] Date 16.03.06 11:02 UTC
Well, 6 ES plus a Gordon plus I would love a GSP and an American Cocker too...and the baby...it would be very crowded and I think hubby will definatly have moved out by then!! LOL
1 of our ES slobbers for England but the others are not too bad.
- By rachelsetters Date 16.03.06 11:23 UTC
Plenty of room definitely :-D - could fit all those in couldn't you!!!
- By setspan [gb] Date 17.03.06 17:39 UTC
Slobber??? I know and have known a lot of Gordons since I was a small thing and most slobber just a few don't, my mum uses the slobber to hold stray bits of hair down before she gets into the ring!
Some are completely mad and some are really laid back, some are really needy for your attention and others are more confident in their own skin, but I have found that ALL of them are very sensitive and very easy to train - some won't do what you want them to do just because they make their own decisions.
My gordon was a character and a half and worth 2 dogs, he was a completely lovable rogue, probably the best dog I will ever own!!
- By rachelsetters Date 17.03.06 21:54 UTC
I must be very very lucky - I have three and no slobber!  Hamish just gets drooly whilst waiting for dinner!!

They all have a mad streak and all love my attention - went to the loo tonight and three gordons all sitting outside the door waiting for me - my irish girl and english boy curled up cosy elsewhere.  All setters will only do what they want if they want to  - not because you ask - you got that right - so true!!

Sometimes one just gets under your skin doesn't it!
