It's absoloutely DISGUSTING! And she was saying how beautiful she is and picking a fight with the groomer! some people are so irrresponsible!
- By melster122 Date 15.03.06 21:42 UTC
I really wanted to watch it but we have Sky + and often don't have a satellite signal for Channel 4.  Tonight of course when Fat Pets and Desperate Housewives are on we don't have a signal.  It is sooooooooooo annoying:mad:
- By danny [gb] Date 15.03.06 22:35 UTC
That woman with the obese bitch rottweiler makes me so angry!! Good on the groomer for sticking up for that poor dog. I have had Rotts for 16 years and I know that that dog is struggling to get about and it did not appear that happy. That stupid woman is killing that dog!!
- By Sarah Gorb [gb] Date 15.03.06 23:02 UTC
My 11 month old Rottie already weighs 35kg, but she isn't fat. You can come and shoot me if either I turn out like that disgusting owner or my girl gets that fat (never gonna happen though as I love my baby).

Other thread is on Idle chat
- By Ella [gb] Date 16.03.06 01:15 UTC
I wanted to smack that woman. Really.

She is killing her dog and shes proud of it!

Disgusting.
- By sara1bee [gb] Date 16.03.06 07:40 UTC
I just could not understand why the woman insisted her dog was NOT FAT! I would have thought it was obvious to everyone that she is! What annoyed me was seeing the poor thing struggling to walk and sitting down puffed out. why did she think this poor dog was happy? the woman should be locked up! They didnt say how old the dog was but i cant see it living much longer.
- By Ella [gb] Date 16.03.06 07:49 UTC
I know. Id give it maybe a year or two.

I swear she must have mistaken the poor dogs constant panting as a 'happy smile' thing. That or she was in major denial, and when she said that she was a similar size to the dog so therefor the dog wasnt fat, because she wasnt I nearly choked.

People like that should not be allowed pets, ever. As far as Im concerned its animal cruelty.
- By morgan [gb] Date 16.03.06 09:05 UTC
it was appalling, the ignorance and arrogance of the woman, however, Im not going to tell her that to her face:eek:
- By labmad [gb] Date 16.03.06 09:17 UTC
I was the person who started the other thread and people were telling me that I should not call the owners names!!!

After only being able to peek through my fingers for 5 minutes whilst watcnhing these poor suffering animals I think my name calling was justified!!!!  I could call them a lot worse believe me!!!!!

IT WAS DISGUSTING!
- By mentalcat [gb] Date 16.03.06 16:33 UTC
Hiya Labmad,

It was me on the other thread :). I've re-read my answer trying to be devils advocate, and I can see that it does sound like I was excusing people for having fat dogs. Honestly I wasn't, but what I meant was that some people reallyt DON'T think their dogs are fat, when they obviously are. There is normally (not always) a deeper seated problem with the owners, and sometimes this has to be sorted out becfore they'll admit their dog has a problem.

I hope that makes more sense now:)

I watched the programme, mostly to see the Rottie that you had talked about, and i was gobsmacked (no easy task!). It was all very, very sad and the programme was supposed to be a 'light hearted look at some of Britains Fattest Pets'  according to the write-ups.

Enough said - Ali :)
- By Phoebe [gb] Date 16.03.06 09:19 UTC
I'm just hoping once she sees herself and her poor dog on the actual TV program, she'll see herself as everybody else does and realize what an idiot she's been. Sometimes it takes a jolt like that to make some people realize how nutty and irrational they are being.

At least the other owners got their acts together.
- By Enfielrotts [eu] Date 16.03.06 09:41 UTC
That's stupid woman with the bitch needs a good smack if you ask me!  That poor dog had to have a fan on her as she could barely breath and I say well done to the parlour lady for speaking her mind, at the end of the day if a dog come in with an ear infection she would have told the owners so why not tell them that their rott was extremely over weight?  She would get more than a piece of mind if I saw her in the street - maybe if more people told her that she was shortening her dogs life and making the poor thing miserable she may eventually listen?

As for the rott dog I think that the owners did spoil him and now realise that he needs to loose the weight, they seemed far more responsive than that other woman and max was a lovely boy - bet he will look great when he has shifted a few more pounds [:D]

I think out of that whole programme the only one who needs a kick up the back side is the mouthy ignorant woman with the bitch!

Rant over LOL!
- By labmad [gb] Date 16.03.06 09:59 UTC
The dogs should be taken off them if they can't look after them properly.  IMO it's just as cruel as starving the dogs and I'm sure the powers that be would step in and take a starving dog off an owner.  To be broadcast on national TV though as well....!  What the hell are these peopl on!!
- By trapes [gb] Date 16.03.06 15:55 UTC
That woman with the Rottie was as thick as.... wasn't she. How irresponsible of her to let her poor dog get to that size. I'm afraid I would have been like the woman grooming her, unable to keep my opinions to myself.  I don't believe she takes it to the vet as any vet would surely tell her it was way over weight!
- By Nikita [gb] Date 16.03.06 19:08 UTC
Agree with you on that, labmad - there should be some sort of upper limit for seizing an animal as well emaciation.  I didn't see the program, but the dog and her owner were in the Daily Mail today - absolutely disgusting, I won't repeat the first words out of my mouth when I turned the page and saw the picture.  Unbelievable!
- By labmad [gb] Date 17.03.06 09:05 UTC
Hiya Mentalcat yes, I can see where you were coming from.

I wonder whether anyone from the RSPCA was watching that programme and I also wonder what guidelines they follow in relation to seizing dogs.  To me that dog (rottie) was :-

Clearly very distressed;
Not looked after properly - to the point of cruelty;
Unhealthy to the point where it's life expectancy was shortened;
In need of urgent help!!

The owner I'm afraid seemed beyond all help!

Can't believe that poor beautiful dog is still with the "owner" after all that!
- By roz [gb] Date 18.03.06 00:12 UTC
There was a review of this programme in the Guardian yesterday and the journalist who wrote it decided to ask the RSPCA for a comment. Their spokeswoman said that they were concerned that fat pets have become an issue of fun recently with people being encouraged to send pictures of overweight animals to national newspapers. She also said that overfeeding could be as cruel as underfeeding and although she didn't know of any cases of obese pets being removed from people on the grounds of cruelty she wouldn't rule it out.

I didn't see the programme but by heck the picture of the dog that accompanied the review was evidence enough! Not that her owner was exactly sylph-like either.

i had no idea what you guys where talking about so i did a little search and when you where all saying this dog was fat i was expecting to see a chubby dog but when i found the story of the dog and a picture i was stunned the owner needs to be shot.

Once a dog is at that point how would you excercise it enough to lose weight without killing it. That poor thing it would probably die before it had enough time to loose weight

for anyone else who doesnt know what everyone else is talking about here is a link of a story about it

- By Ella [gb] Date 18.03.06 08:49 UTC
Correct me if Im wrong, but wasnt she also giving the poor thing treats while walking it?

Defeats the purpose of taking her walking....
- By slee [au] Date 18.03.06 09:37 UTC
i think another terrible thing is she was giving the dog a bucket load of chocolate every week and chocolate is toxic to a dog

read this

this is another story on the dog it has better pictures while he does appear to be smiling because she is panting her eyes say otherwise her eye say she is in agony while walking

I know, at least the other rottie owners and the Cav and cat owners knew there was a problem and are managing to do something. That woman should be prosecuted for cruelty - and my OH says that under the new animal welfare laws she actually could be prosecuted - I certainly hope so! My only problem with the other owners was why did the woman clip off that lovely Cavalier's coat - when he's lost a few more pounds (he's big for the breed so 10kg would be fine, not 5-8!) he would look stunning with a nice long coat! :-)
- By Nikita [gb] Date 18.03.06 15:08 UTC
That was the pic I saw in the Daily Mail, absolutely horrific.  I've got nothing against dogs having treats on walks - I never leave without a pocket full with my two - but it's out of their daily feed.  It's not hard to do.
- By roz [gb] Date 18.03.06 16:26 UTC

>But jobless Andrea, 44, who lives with husband Stan, 45, in Farnworth, near Manchester, says Beau has one meal at tea time, does not eat chocolate and has eight walks a day. (Daily Record story)

Eight walks a day? Presumably this means to and from the kitchen.
