What are the chances of my bitch becoming pregnant from a slip mating?
- By mari [ie] Date 28.05.02 15:07 UTC
Hi guest you must provide more information re the question you asked , before you can get an answer.
You have left this to our imagination and it is not a question I am prepared to answer without further details :) just tell us what happened , and we will try and help. Mari

Hi mari, thanks for getting in touch.Ive mated my bitch in her last two seasons to a dog that turns out to have a low sperm count, obviously she missed both times, hence the stud dog owner having the test done.Ive decided to go with her number two dog, he is unproven but sound in pedigree, hips etc.We got a mate yesterday but they didnt tie, like her last two unsuccessful matings. I really want her to be successful this time as i feel very let down after all the let downs in the last two years!, im taking her again this evening to see if its more successful, is this wise etc.The stud dog has had a sperm test and is very fertile. Im going at 6.15, and would like a third opinion please!
- By dizzy [gb] Date 28.05.02 18:07 UTC
you sure can get pups from a slip mating, as neither the male or female are proven then id go for as many breedings as the dogs are prepared to have-within reason, hopefully you'll get something this time, if not perhaps the bitch might need a check up, good luck anyhow and let us know if you do manage a tie, but dont worry if its another slip, , she very well could take from that too,
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 28.05.02 18:47 UTC
Thanks Dizzy, just come back from another session with the dog, we got another slip mating tonight. I think that the main prob is that the dog is fairly well endowed, both parties still seem keen so i will be going back tomorrow lunch time for another try! its exhausting( for me) let alone the dogs!.Whats your opinion on human home pregnancy tests used on dogs?
- By dizzy [gb] Date 28.05.02 18:52 UTC
if i remember right its the bitch inside that grabs the swollen member , not the male, i dont think it matters what size he is---well maybe to him it might :)
as for human pregnancy tests theyre not supposed to work, if they did im sure we'd all be using them,
- By mari [ie] Date 28.05.02 21:51 UTC
Hi Kerry I see my friend has been looking after you :D She is right you can most certainly get a a litter from a slip mating , I did ,
I see you are experiencing all the joys of breeding
I would suggest Kerry that artificial imsemination may have been more advisable as she is not holding , I dont know if the vet will do that now but do talk to him about it , best wishes Mari
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 28.05.02 22:03 UTC
Thanks for reply Mari, after reading nearly all the message boards for clues etc on sucessful breeding, im really confused!, do you think that my bitch wont hold the dog in a tie because she isnt ready? or just doesnt fancy him or cant be bothered?.How many times will she put up with being mated, i say this because she is fairly submissive and maybe is just standing for the dog because im holding her? i feel like im flogging her to death. She is on day eleven of her season and has already had five slip mates in a few days , and another booked for tomorrow!
- By dizzy [gb] Date 28.05.02 22:30 UTC
the majority---NOT ALL- of bitches arent ready until their 11th-12day, . you may find that when shes right they'll tie, as youve mated her so often from an early time, id suggest you make it atwo days before you go back, as the sperm from today will still be viable then, and poor souls had more sex than most already, when you go again steady her and dont let the dog just jump her, leash him and let him sniff and lick if hes interested ,you should get an idea then from the bitch, shed probably turn her tail to the side if shes interested and stand herself up for him, my guess is youve started off too soon,. is the stud dog owner experienced or not? and just out of interest what breed is she, :D
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 28.05.02 22:46 UTC
The problem this time was she came into season earlier than i expected, i suddenly noticed that she was bleeding when i bathed her on sat, i assumed from the size of her bits that it was only just had happened,so i assumed it was maybe only day one. She has been flirting with my castrated dog all week! She is a hungarian puli so her cords conseal the area very well , which is why she caught me unaware this time.Because of all the previous matings with the low sperm dog, and the fact that she is 3 tomorrow , i dont really wont her to miss this time.I only want her to have one litter. The breeder is very experienced, and sympathetic to my cause, my bitch did reject the dog on two meetings, but accomadated last nite and tonight, she is obviously ready but isnt tieing which i cant understand?.Which is why i dont want to keep mating her if the slip will work, but she still seems keen ?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 28.05.02 22:56 UTC
I have found my own bitches have been keen to be mated earlier than experienced studs knew they were ready. An experienced male is usually right. I would go with mating them every other day as long as she will stand!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 28.05.02 22:42 UTC
What breed have you got.

None of my bitches have ever produced puppies when mated earlier than on day 14.

One had a litter of 9 after one mating on day 15, where on day 13 the dog penetrated and turned to soon, pulling himself free, and ejaculating on the grass!!!! I was told that she probably didn't hold him as it was too early!

I think it is early yet. If you are able mate them every other day for as long as she will stand. I would not hold her but supervise discreetly, as they should be able to work things out for themselves, and if neccesary only a steadying hand is needed to keep her still and help him turn if a tie is acchieved!
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 28.05.02 22:57 UTC
I must also add that when i say i hold her , i dont mean im forcing her. It is discreet and she actually comes to me anyway ,almost for approval whilst in the act.
- By dizzy [gb] Date 28.05.02 23:09 UTC
kerry, when you take her next and they get going, when the dog is in and starts going faster,DONT LET HIM GET OFF, when hes finished thrusting just hold him on for a while in the same position, you'll see hes still [pumping-SORRY !!!!couldnt think how else to put it]
ive known a few bitches that dont tie and it never stopped them concieving, id imagine you'll be ok this time if everyones fertile!
what a sight they must be when theyre at it, cords flying all over the place-bad enough watching the wrinklys .
- By dizzy [gb] Date 28.05.02 23:11 UTC
brainless-do you think theyd manage with out some-one parting the cords for them :D------i had my bitch mated once on her 11th and she had 7 !!!my sister mated hers about 3 times and got 14!!!! yikes,
- By Brainless [gb] Date 29.05.02 07:44 UTC
From what I remeber they have tails over the back. I think they could always pull all the cords in the region up onto her back with a hair scrunchie LOL!

Typical isn't it, if she got out she would get mated and take to the first mongrel, impeding cords or no impeding cords :D :D :D
- By mari [ie] Date 29.05.02 00:55 UTC
Well Kerrie you could be right about her not being ready. I cant add to what the others have advised so its fingers crossed for you. best of luck Mari
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 29.05.02 08:25 UTC
Thanks for all the advice everyone, i feel alot happier now and think i will leave todays mate and give them a day off (and me).The cord thing is a bit of a problem, we have scrunchies all over the place! It is her birthday after all!
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 03.06.02 19:56 UTC
Hi everybody, Ive got a new problem now!,my bitch managed a tie last night after a few slips in the previous week, she has obviously peaked because she is driving my castrated dog insane, she is flirting and whining at him which she never has in previous seasons!, does this mean that she needs another mating?. Can anyone tell me how long it will take for her body to tell her shes pregnant before she goes off her season, or does this mean shes not and we should go again. This is getting completely ridiculas , i surely cant go again, she doesnt seem to care how many times i take her to the dog! Please advice me, i think i have a nyphamaniac on my hands!
- By dizzy [gb] Date 03.06.02 21:20 UTC
how many days in do you reckon she is now-it sounds like shes spot on-hence the tie and the flirting!!.it might pay to to go again in 2 days, is the owner of the stud dog charging per time !! or just board and lodgings :D
- By mari [ie] Date 03.06.02 22:12 UTC
I think Dizzy is right Kerry looks like she is really only ready now
I am afraid you have a hussey on your hands :D making hay while the sun shines she is , lol Mari
- By westie lover [gb] Date 04.06.02 11:59 UTC
Yep i'd keep going til either the dog or bitch loses interest, if its convenient to do so. If not, one good mating at the exactly right time will give as big a litter as with many matings. But saying that, some bitches sometimes "think" they are ready and will flirt and take a dog a day or two before ovulation. So I'd mate them again, at least once more, ideally 36 hours later if you can. Belt and braces LOL.
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 19.06.02 13:43 UTC
Hi all, took all your advice and now im just getting impatient waiting for result! . My bitch is booked in for a scan a week from today so she should be around 4weeks by then, does anyone have any little tips apart from going to vet for a poke about ,how i could tell if shes pregnant. Its so early on for her i doubt if she knows herself, but i cant wait to find out, im so excited(silly moo) x
- By Brainless [gb] Date 19.06.02 14:22 UTC
The only tip that works is, PATIENCE!!! LOL :D

That first litter seems to take ages to be born, or pregnancy confirmed, but after that 9 weeks everything else always goes too soon!
- By westie lover [gb] Date 19.06.02 17:22 UTC
Hi, ususally the nipples are a little enlarged and firmer while in season and dont return to normal if she is pregnant. If they are pink ones rather than black ones, they will look pinker than normal. Some bitches bring up a little yellow froth around three weeks and may go off their food for a day or two around this time. Other than that you'll just have to chew yer nails til the scan!!
- By dizzy [gb] Date 19.06.02 18:58 UTC
i find the first signs are the bitch go's all gooey, sticks to you much more, also as westie lover said, the nipples at the very back tend to change shape and colour!i find appetite can change, real pigs for the first few weeks,
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 20.06.02 14:53 UTC
Thanks everyone, did the nipple check they seem quite pink which has got to be good, she even has a small crusty something on them?.I spoke to a lady by chance this morning who told me i must shave my puli because the puppies will suffocate on the cords! I think i must stop listening to things like this or has she got a point?
- By Bec [gb] Date 20.06.02 15:12 UTC
I always trim the ahir away from the nipples so the puppies dont suck the hair as well as the teat! But this is only underneath not the whole coat.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.06.02 19:11 UTC
Quinn who posts here has a neighbour who shows and breeds Puli's, hopefully she can ask for you what the rout9ine is?
- By Val [gb] Date 20.06.02 19:16 UTC
Perhaps your bitch's breeder should be the person to contact. The Puli world is a very small one. I would certainly want to be the one to help/steer someone with one of my bitches.
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 26.06.02 20:23 UTC
Hi all, Wonderfull news. My bitch is pregnant!. After all my speculations. She must of got caught with the slip mating, because she is a week further on than from the 25minute tye mating. The scan showed six pups at 31 days approx. Im so excited. Thanks for all your help! x

hi all. another update from me ,my bitch is on day 63 and doesnt seem to be showing any signs of an inpending whelping . My prob is that shes beem panting and restless for a week now, but i think its the hot weather, and that shes so huge and umcomfortable. How long is too long to go overdue. She is a puli and ive been told that the gestation is about 60 days or less. The owner of the stud dog thinks its ok, and shes fine. Its her first litter and mine.Any second opinions would be welcome.
- By carolyn Date 28.07.02 12:19 UTC
I would still say get her to a vet
it will cost around £20 to £30 depnding on where you live
I know you would be heart broken to lose the pups (if any)
or the bitch just for the sake of a bit of money.
Its the only way you will know for sure.
if she is you will have time to get things ready for the birth
if she isnt you may be able to see if there is any reason for the panting and uncomfortableness.
It will set your mind at rest one way or the other.
this board is brill for help and advise but people should still see vets if they are worried.
- By kerrie30 [gb] Date 29.07.02 09:01 UTC
hi carolyn, ive been ready for the birth for a week now, she has been scanned and theres supposed to be at least six pups!. Just had an awful night with her, cos its so hot i hope?.People keep telling me to be patient, but its so hard!.The pups r still being very active in her tummy and she seems quite happy , infact over happy.I really dont know what to do , the vet will stress her out,i think i will leave it untill this afternoon and see what the day brings. Thanks for advice tho, it is always handy, will post you later with update. X
- By carolyn Date 29.07.02 09:07 UTC

- By carolyn Date 30.07.02 14:04 UTC

It could still be a while yet mine will rip up the paper
for upto 2 days before anything
