Topic Dog Boards / Showing / New here, desperately need some advice for my shih tzu

Hello everyone,
Im posting on here because I haven't managed to find anywhere else that might be able to help me. I have a 11 month old black and white ped Shih Tzu. However, her coat matts up very easily at the moment, and I think what we are using to bath her may not be helping. We currently use normal asda dog shampoo. I would like to get something better for her, that will help with the grooming and also make her coat that bit more glossy. Does anyone recommend anything for me to use on her. We bath her every 1 to 2 weeks. I would like to spend roughly £10-15

Hope someone can help, because I'd love to be able to show her once we've got this problem sorted.

Hi Butterfly and welcome! :D
Dont forget you cant post the same topic on different boards, you will probably find that Admin will remove one of your threads as you have the same one on general and showing! ooops!;)
Dont worry, you dont need to put it on all the boards, most people read this site in the "active topics" which shows you all the new posted questions/threads at once...so Folk will see your question! :)
There are some extremely experienced people here and some great groomers..Im sure you'll be getting lots of good advice soon.

hi there, the only way to prevent her matting up is by brushing her every day makeing sure that she has no tangles anywhere always make sure that in her armpits and inside of the back legs and behind ears are clear to,  you can get a spray called main and tail for horses but i found it works really well on dogs to help prevent matting, also useing a better quality shampoo.   http://www.groomers-online.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4_6_48&products_id=188&zenid=3c8995f3236006b7874b8cc777ce37c9 try this shampoo and this conditoner http://www.groomers-online.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_51&products_id=199 used both these products and found them to work well.

hope it helps

A friend has this breed and she puts some oils in the coat and leaves it and the coats are always perfect, they look awful when they've got the oils in but are always perfect at the show ring.

I will be seeing her on Wednesday so I'll ask her what she uses.

At 11 months your puppy is changing from puppy to adult coat and that's why it's matting badly.
The answer is to groom more until the full adult coat comes through.  Use a slicker brush for quickness or a pin brush if you want to protect the coat, every other day at the moment, grooming right back to the skin and then go through with a comb to check if you've missed any knots.
Use a good quality conditioner.  Only bath when necessary and when you do, wet groom her thoroughly as you dry her with the hairdryer - it helps to part the coat and get right back to the skin.
Once the adult coat comes through, you should be able to get away with thorough grooming just twice a week to keep a Shih Tzu in full coat.
