Hi Guys,

I'm looking for low salt treats for a dog that has mitral value insufficiency...(Heart)  can anyone give me some tips, i.e. low salt human titbits or commercial doggie biscuits...  any ideas greatly appreciated..  Thanks :-)

Looking through Milo's snacks the James Wellbeloved Cracker Jacks have no salt. No sugar, artificial flavours or preservatives either and the duck are yummy! His Burns Kelties don't have any salt but they do contain seaweed so I'm not sure about how much salt that adds. You can also make your own liver cake and liver treats which make up the bulk of my dog's treats. There were some recipes posted recently on this board, just search for liver cake. Of if you want PM me and I'll send you the recipes.

You can always make your own treats.  There are lots of commercial treats with no added salt as well, should not be a problem to find them.   Only thing I would suggest is that you are familiar with salt under any other name, e.g., sodium and sodium compounds.   Looking up low salt diet information for people is also helpful - so you know that your dog needs to stay away from treats like cheese.

And your point and understanding ?
- By HuskyGal Date 13.03.06 23:34 UTC
well,My understanding is limited...but my mind enquiring (at best!..at worst muddled ;) )
Take at look at this Abdady dog treats and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Might this explain the differing view on ingredient? Seems the American are slightly more up front than us at times.
Until very recently I had no idea that Bullspizzles were P*nis's (ick! lol)
and most people are unaware the gross deep fat fried 'Paddywhacks' they buy are tendons. (my choice of the word gross pertains to deep frying not muscle meat :) )

:D

Yep, confined to the kitchen, that's me, lol.  I have a load of recipes and at least this way I can use organic whole fresh foods.

I don't do much baking these days but I do make liver cake and wanted to add variety.  Puffed jerky is a favourite too.  I also found a company that uses organic whole fresh foods, low salt and cooks biscuits, treats etc to order.

Thanks for all your tips, guys, much appreciated. :-)

Hi, I bought some treats at Crufts from a company called Feelwells, they are a totally natural, hypoallergenic probiotic treat and according to the company have no added salt or sugar and are preserved with Rosemary. The only salt in them is naturally occuring in the ingredients and this is a level of 0.4%. Hope this helps their web site is www.feelwells.co.uk
