Hi
Can anyone suggest a good herbal remedy for show nerves. My dog gets really stressed at big events and is getting knocked back because of this. I really need something to relax him without causing lethargy

Double scotch on the rocks? LOL Bach rescue remedy is said to be calming, I know it works quite well for me when all else fails during school holidays.........

Is it your nerves that are transfering to the dog. A good tip I had is to carry a little cooked mince beef in your mouth when in the ring. Sounds gross doesnt it but it masks the smell of fear on your breath which the dog can pick up on, so I am told and it seems to work for lots of show people.

Quiet life tablets are really good for nerves ;) they won't cause lethargy, but will simply stop the nerves becoming too much :) Bach rescue remedy is also good, I have used both myself as I sometimes get so nervous I can barely think. I've also used them with a very highly strung Bedlington who used to be unmanageable, after a while the dog stopped needing them, and I don't use them nearly as often as I used to :)
Hi
There are Herbal drops you can give your dog which will not make him lethagic just take the edge off his nerves.
It's called 'Organic Valerian Compound' and you can get it online from Dorwest Herbs.
www.dorwest.com
I know quite a few people who use it and find it very effective

Mints work for this purpose as well. :)
I wouldn't recommend that you use Quiet Life tablets for your dog. They are brilliant for owners, but are not recommended to be given to animals,as the ingredients are untested. I can't comment about the other heuman herbal remedies recommended on here, but I do carry professional knowledge about Quiet Life tablets.
I have used Dr Bachs rescue remedy and found it works quite well and you can put as many drops on the dogs tongue as you want and as often as you want as well.

Hi Goldmail
The beauty of the mince though is that the dog will actively look to your face especially if you produce the tit bit for it to eat. Yep I said it was gross didn't I.

Since you mentioned it calmstorm, did you hear about the spaniel having the half pint of lager last night on Crufts to calm her nerves.
No.......lol.......I only meant it as a joke! Can't imagine why anyone would give alcohol in reality! Did it move well....or at all! bet it had a grin on its face.

I didn't see it move, they only told us about the dog in the commentary. My sisters dogs really used to enjoy having a beer once in awhile (dane x ridgebacks). No lager though they wouldn't touch the stuff. Of course is was american lager - yuck! Hey, maybe that was Speedy's method of prepping for the obedience.

a herbalist told me that bach remedy works best if you can manage to get it under the dogs tongue!
Under the tounge is the place to put it, supposed to absorb eaiser.
