Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / one of my girls pups died
- By slee [au] Date 10.03.06 06:22 UTC
I just recieved an email from one of the new owners of the pups they have had the pup for nearly 4 weeks and had a vet check before it left me and a couple of days after it left me and all came back clear. But about 2 weeks ago it started vomiting blood and bloody stools so the owners took it to the vet, the vet tested for parvo but it came back clear (all pups had been vaccinated for parvo) so they gave the pups some anti biotics and sent him home. Then it got a little better for about a week and then started back up again the vet decided to keep the pup in and the pup had died this morning im so heart broken. But am finding something a little strange about it all because if i took one of my girls or a pup to my vets they would never have let the dog leave until the knew exactly why there was blood in its stools and vomit.

What do you all think ?

correction they would have had the pup going on 5 weeks

Oh Slee I'm so sorry to hear this {{{hugs}}} to you

My vet wouldn't have released the dog either until he'd found out what was wrong, but i suppose all vets work differently

God Bless xx

Have you actually spoken to the new owners vet to find out more info on what has happened??
- By calmstorm Date 10.03.06 07:18 UTC
It seems strange the vets were so 'easy going' with one so young. trouble is, you will never know the 'full' story, did you ever find out what was the pups problem? My heart goes out to you, it must be such awful news. take care
- By slee [au] Date 10.03.06 08:44 UTC
the most info ive been given so far is a viral infection but they have asked for a refund and my vet always told me if anyone asks for a refund after a pups death i should ask for the pups body and have a necropsy done by my vet. Which i agree and ive asked for the pups body or a refund wont be possible because i need to make sure if it is genetical, enviromental (mine or theirs) and if it is mine i need to have all other pups checked and inform new owners.

I dont see why they would say no seen im paying for the necropsy to be done

They would be covered within 5 weeks by the insurance that you provided, wouldn't they?
- By calmstorm Date 10.03.06 10:00 UTC
I would have thought the 6 weeks insurance should have refunded them their money, so I'm wondering, if it was Kc insurance, they actually made the call or ticked the box on the reg document to register their puppy with the insurance company. I doubt you would be told that by the insurance company, due to information restrictions, but it may be worth a call to the registration dept to see if they had actually changed ownership with the kc. Within a couple of weeks of their details being known by the Kc they would have been offered insurance, the same with Pet Plan, so if they have decided not to take up the offer they can't come back to you for that. If they have claimed, then coming to you for a refund is a bit much, to say the least! I can understand why you want the body tested, it must be so worrying for you not knowing if this was a genetic problem as it could affect your other puppies, and you really don't want to scare the other purchasers at this time by giving them the info on the dead puppy, just in case the problem was with the new owners and not yourself in any way. have you done a call to the owners of the other pups, just to see how things are going? May be an idea. Without testing, who's to say the dead pup didn't eat something it shouldn't, or that they actually followed the vets advice regarding treatment? the vet can give the medication, but it's up to the owner to follow the instructions to the letter and if they don't its hardly your fault should the pup not survive. Try and have all correspondance with them by letter, so you have a record of your offers and solutions regarding this, if you have done it by fone so far, write a letter outlining your conversation, and your offers, and send it by recorded delivery. Hopefully they will reply. When money becomes involved it can become tricky, they may decide the small clames court is the answer, and it seems the courts go on the side of the claiment with dog breeding, not the breeder, so do try to ensure you are seen to be helping as much as possible, and keep a record with letters and notes in your diary of any contact with them. Will they allow the vet records for the puppy to be released to you or your vet? It would be a good idea to write this in a letter as well, if they agree then you or your vet can see these reports and your vet can be more informed of what has happened etc. I am just hoping for your sake the body has not yet been destroyed, so a PM can be carried out.
This is so awful, you are suffering the loss of one of the babies you helped bring into this world, nurtured and loved, thought you had found a good home, and then to have this added stress is so unfair. Sending my hugs also, and hoping this situation works out ok.

Slee's in Australia, so the puppy insurance system might be different to that in the UK. Certainly worth looking into, though.

I'd forgotten that.

Sorry to hear about the pup slee. It must be worrying for you. I  think you are being very sensible to ask for the body so that you can have a post mortem done. It probably won't show up anything that could affect the other pups and so will put your mind at rest. Best of luck in geting the owners' co-operation.

no insurance isnt included that is something the new owner has to buy themselves and for what the insurances cover over here it really isnt worth it it makes more sense to put money aside for emergency and vet checks. Insurance over here covers accidents which require immediate surgery or vet care and illnesses that need immediate vet care or surgery it really only covers the basics although there is one insurance which all vets recommend and it does cover a little more then all the rest but is still pretty limited.

If it is something that i have done or was picked up on my property then i will refund i actually have no prob refunding but i wont to know exactly what happened because if it is something that could affect the other pups the other owners need to get their new pup to the vet. Im not dissapointed with the new owners i am with their vet though i have never known a vet to not properly daignose something serious and send a dog especially a pup home. These people where new dog owners they had just gotten married and wanted to get a cattle to make a little family because they have no plans on children for a very long time at first i wasnt sure whether i was going to give them a pup because i wasnt sure if they were ready but i had them spend alot of time with the pup while it was here and had them come over and take him for walks and they seemed perfect for him. I definetly dont think they did anything deliberate they were just doing what the vet told them i just wish they had contacted me sooner because i would have paid for him to go to my vet my vet would never have let that pup leave until they new exactly what was wrong and he was on the road to recovery.

They got back to me this morning and told me i could have the pups body and that they had to pick it up by monday and would bring him to me so i will have my vet find out what really happened.

This is the kinda thing that puts you off breeding i feel terrible for the new owners but am also sad because i had them for so long and struck a little bond with them too probably a little more then i do with any other litter because mum had to stop taking care of them early so then it was all left to me.

So sorry for you, Slee, and of course for the new owners. It's awful to loose a pup you've bred and sold, even if it's nobody's fault, really. The vet's diagnosis of virus sounds very plausible to me. Though I can't understand the course of treatment. Such a young pup should have been kept at the vet's on intravenous drip until the condition had improved.
I really don't think you have to worry about this happening to one of the other pups. It's just one of those unlucky things that sometimes happen :-(
I've been in your situation, and I know how awful it feels.
Sending you big hugs,
Karen

Sounds good, at least now you will be able to find out what went wrong for the poor little puppy. May put your mind at rest for the other puppies. keep your chin up, hope it works out ok. if I were them I'd be thinking about a change of vet though. Well, thats mild for what I'd be thinking.........but I may get banned for expressing my real thoughts

I'm so sorry Slee. Could it have been some sort of poisoning?
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 11.03.06 07:47 UTC
A friend that I know had a puppy go to it's new home.
Then they had the heartbreaking call to say puppy had died :(
They had PM done and it turned out puppy had eaten a house plant that was poisonous.

Owners were devastated - they weren't first time dog owners either. They'd gone
round puppy proofing etc and hadn't even realised the house plant was poisonous.
- By marguerite [gb] Date 11.03.06 10:04 UTC
Lots of house plants and garden plants are poisonous, could the pup possibly have eaten a bulb from the garden. i.e. a daffodil bulb? Many new owners do not realise this, also some types of "forrest bark" for gardens are also poisonous, and chewing gum, I remember a few years ago there was a debate on these boards about this, so it should still be somewhere in the archives, also gave you an american site to visit that listed all the plants indoor and out that were harmful.  Someone else might have the links for these sites.
