Hey Everyone

New day, new stupidity. Today, every time a doorbell goes on the TV, the Mock has been barking frantically and running around as if someone's at the door. :( It even wakes him up from a massively deep sleep. Telling him to be quiet does nothing and he won't then shut up until i have opened the door to prove nothing's there. I know he's a guarding breed (Dobe) but this is ridiculous. Is there anything I can do or is it just a puppy idiosyncrasy (sp??) that he may grow out of (he's 9 months now)

Thanks
Beth

we don't have a door bell so no reaction from mine to that. There is an advert though where someones mobile rings at the pictures - it has the same ring as Pete's phone and when Sam hears it he jumps up and looks round expecting one of us to lunge for the phone.

No idea how you get him over it - my Grandads dog always used to go nuts anytime there was a door knock noise on the telly and that went on for YEARS ;) (sorry)

Had a GSD that used to do that, dam nuisance, not only would he bark his head off but to stop him you had to get up and open the door. We did not have a bell either but I quess his previous owners did. Ja:)kie

Hi BethN

My two are the same...in fact any noise that is on the TV (which isn't talking) they go mental for..luckily enough, our doorbell is broken...the kids in the village used to go past and ring it...just to make them bark...(little B***grs)..they would just settle down for a nap...and the off it went !! :D :D

They also bark at any dog, or cat sound from the TV....

Max was the same but I think we've got him out of it. We have tried two methods - one is to send him to bed everytime he barks at the doorbell or even gets that little bit excited and the other is a bit of reverse psychology everytime we come back from a walk we go in by the front door and ring the doorbell before we go in. It was funny to see his face on the other side of the door when the bell went off he really looked puzzled lol :d

My two go mad at the sound of the doorbell. We dont know many people where we live yet so the dogs think it is always a take away delivery :D :D

Yep me too. My Lab does the same, every time the doorbell on the TV goes. But I have got it sorted, I've just taught him (over repeated efforts, dont ask me how long it took) by quietly saying "sssshhhh Tig its the Telly" or "sssshhh Tig its next door" he got the hang of it eventually. Only problem now is he's got it, but the other three then wake up and they have'nt quite got the hang of it just yet:) At least they don't bark though, they dont need to thats his job - lol

Hi Beth,
Your not alone, Storm recently woke the whole household up one morning howling at the doorbell, it was a delivery van driver, with a parcel at 7.30  , kids had the day off school. So that blew the lie in bed, in the head. :D We all darted downstairs wondering what was wrong with him, and he just stood there with a silly malamute smile on his face.:)
Only did it the once :)

Well, I can't offer any solution as I've must have the two dogs that never bark at the doorbell! Oh, they run to the front door, and stand behind it wagging tails - everyone who comes to our house is obviously a friend! Has given a few people on the other side of the door a start though, they don't know they're there. Our house has front door, step down into porch, porch door and then 2 more steps down to drive - it was a nightmare with a pram, believe me!
Most people stand out on the drive and ring the bell - but - if someone comes into the porch and knocks on the door, then that's a different matter - they're virtually in the house and must be barked at, those intruders!

Beth, Berry has taken on answering the door as her job. lol she dives for it scattering all in her way to get there first .:(
Yes she does answer the door for the telly noises and the phone .
I have had this many many times with other dogs over the yrs.
I love it .
Enjoy it Beth as it wont last they grow up and like children dont want to do anything either :) I think that laughing at them when it happens make them realise there is no need to panic . Mari

Change your doorbell to a buzzer or a spring sound???? :D :D :D :D

Seriously, I believe the "Ssshhh, it's only the telly" association will work after some time. Esp. if you can get a tape and play it over and over and over and over, just do the same calm words each time and have Mock sit/lie through it all :)

Each time we move, there's a sigh of relief for the first couple of times the new bell 'rings' and the girls don't react. They quickly learn the association between People + Doorbell and there goes the quiet ;) Seriously, I prefer having them respond, than not.

Most of the time, they have better hearing for it than I do. When they built this place, they put the ringer right over the front door. Well there's a hallway and it's not strong enough to get past there if there's noise in the living room or upstairs. The girls have a special bark when that quiet bell goes off and it really helps out :) It also tells someone I'm coming, but I"m not alone :d :D :D :D :P

It is funny, though, when they respond to certain sounds coming from the tv. For some reason, Chienne was having 'fun' watching "Dinotopia" last night. Sitting next to my feet on the raised recliner, her ears kept moving up/down/to the side and she was really interested in the picture????? Not her usual thing :)
toodles

Stinky Fat Dog goes nuts when she hears the phone ring, either on TV or in real life. I'm sure she's trying to tell us that the phone is ringing, but we can't hear it over the barking.

Funniest was when TH first saw the Famous Grouse advert on the TV. She almost died of excitement at seeing a 2' grouse in the corner of the sitting room :D

Storm's the same, When Dogs come on the Tv, he try's to get at them, barking.:D
We have a Video with Mals on and he absolutely loves to join in with the howling.
You should have seen him when Crufts was on, we had to restrain him. :D
He does like to sit and watch Tv anyway, especially when Footballs
on too.:)

Footballs Ambers favorite. She likes a nice wide shot, plenty of green with the players not to tight so she can follow the ball. One man and his dog was a favourite too, especially again with the wide shots, not too many trees and plenty of whistles :)

It was the yellow pages add when it made a bell sound that drove Lydia up the wall and me. The thing is we didn't have doorbell at home but she still went to the door when she heard the advert and that's in a different direction to the TV, very strange!!
