Help! My bitch is on day 16 and has no wish to stand for any dog. My male is neutered and very interested in her, the dog next door is interested, and I have taken her to a stud dog to be mated and she has snapped at him on both trips. Can anyone enlighten me if there bitch has been late in standing. I have heard of a bitch that was successfully mated on day 21. Look forward to your replies. Perhaps she just wants to be a spinster.

Not all girls are happy to be mated even at their peak! One of my girls is a real grump, growls at the stud dog! Thankfully the stud dog takes it all in his stride and once they have achieved a tie she relaxes and 'enjoys' the rest of the mating!
Is your girl definitely ready? If so, you'll just have to make sure you've got hold of her tightly or even put a muzzle on her........some girls just aren't happy to be mated.
I'm not sure if she is ready. She is playing with the dogs and mounting them but jumps out the way when they try to mount her. Her tail has not crooked at all, I am not sure if she is ready or not. I do not want to force her to mate. Her mother was ready on day 9. All I wanted to know was if anyone had a bitch that was late in showing signs of wanting to mate. The stud dog did not take kindly to being snapped at and lost a bit of interest.

Why don't you pop her along to the vet and get her pre-mate tested to see if she's close to being ready?

how old is she ?
is this her first mating or your first mating ?
a maiden girl can be very frustrating they have an urge but they are kinda nervous and arnt really sure about it all but once the first mating is done most will warm up to it
My bitch is 18 months old. Her mother was 18 months when she had her first litter. This is her first mating and we are now on day 17, she is playing and mounting other dogs but when it comes to actually mating she doesn't want to know. I will not force her. Perhaps she is a bit young and hasn't matured enough yet. I may take her back to the stud dog one more time, but she seems to be getting smaller and maybe her season is slowing down now. Will have to try next time.

Unless she's a toy breed, she's too young to have a litter yet anyhow, even if her mother did......
I should bide your time - you could easily give her another full year to mature.

Your breed club will advise the minimum age appropriate for your breed, often enshined in their code of ethics, although of course individuals may be less mature as you say. Have you been in touch with them anyway to ensure you are complying with their current recommendations for premating health screening?
I think she is a bit immature. I always had the feeling she was not quite ready. Her mum is a really healthy mature dog and was ready at 18 months. I won't mention the breed as they don't seem to like that on this website. Her mother was climbing 6ft walls 2 days before her litter was due wading off foxes. A different dog altogether, I will wait, am not that anxious for another litter.
