The best thing is to get your vet to show you how it's done. There's a knack - and a horrendous stink!

hmmm, why couldn't my dog have something easy and nice to sort out!!.

oh well........ out with the marigolds!!

Once you know how to do it, it isn't difficult. But if you try doing it when you don't know how you could end up hurting your dog. That's why it's best to get the vet (or other experienced person) to show you.

I've heard that you can do it your self but don't ask me how! most people have it done @ the vets I think it's quite a simple thing to do, but you would be best asking someone who knows more. I'm sure someone on here will know what to do. Sorry I can't be more help.

This can also be a sign that the dog has worms, so it might be time to worm her.

I would defo get the vet to do it the first time.  My dog needed a bit of a painkiller to do it the first time because his were so compacted.  Please dont do it yourself you could hurt your dog, and it could be that it is worms and you could be squeezing glands that dont need squeezing

Good idea to have it checked out!  They may not be blocked but at least you'll know she just has a strange habit.  :)  One of mine scoots along the floor periodically but, knock on wood, hasn't had an impaction.  My other was impacted, showed no signs and by the time he began to they were already infected.

Emptying them yourself is very simple after the vet shows you how.  :)

I think LeanneK is right to suggest checking it out with your vet, rather than just going DIY.  If the glands are impacted, the treatment is going to be painful.  If they are infected, your dog may need antibiotics.  If anal glands aren't the problem, you could be creating one.

In my experience, worm infestation is less likely to be a cause of anal irritation, unless the infestation is so severe it causes diarrhoea.

I can do it fine on my Yankee, but my Cavalier yelps when I do him - don't know if his glands are weird, or if he's just a total wuss!!
