Hi

Can anyone help me, my 5month old lab keeps emptying her water bowl and carrying the bowl off with her. I have tried a heavy bowl, but she digs the water out all over the place. Have tried saying no to her, but I think she thinks that it is a game.

This is quite common in lots of breeds , one of my westies does this as well, she will carry the empty bowl from the kitchen to living room to ask for more water, but, when you go into the kitchen the water is all over the floor.

Our 9 month old Sheltie likes to 'dig' the water out of the bowl and lick it up off her 'dinner mat'  She only does it sometimes though

I have 3 different bowls & the large heavy eartherware one is the only one that our pup leaves alone. The plastic weighted one gets emptied & chewed, the metal one gets carried around like a tin hat but he can't get a good grip on the earthernware one. He used to dig the water out of it but seems to have grown out of that now - digs the garden instead!

What about a raised stand? My goldie used to do that when he was a baby, but I got him the raised stand and he couldn't quite figure out how to lift the bowl out from the stand
Was very funny though....... and in the end, he gave up trying

Hi

I had this problem with my lab too - she used to dig in it:eek:.  I bought a very heavy stainless steel water bowl from our local pet shop, its quite wide at the top then goes narrow at the bottom.  She hasnt done it since

Since the Purdue study I don't use raised bowls, but I have keen carrier of waterbowls. The solution was a stainless steel bucket with a large scrubbed stone in the bottom.

You need one of these type of bowls.http://www.poshpets.co.uk/pets/default.asp?a=product&pt=f&productID=23931&title=Dog%20Non%20Spill%20Dish

Hi
my shepherd does this i have tried every bowl i can find and in the end i got a big plastic bucket, and keep it full outside by my back door ,i put 2 caps of apple cider vineger in it ,as i read that this is good for the dog and keeps the bucket very clean. We make sure that she is aways able to get to the water (and if we didn't she would let us know about it ) but i proberley have the cleanest back yard in our street.

I raised the water (and food) bowls off the floor using a bowl in a bucket :) it stopped the 'digging' but only till they realised if they 'nosed' the bucket they could have a nice freeflow of running water to paddle in  Had to put a couple of housebricks in said bucket to keep it upright :P

I've had the same problems too although all mine in turn have grown out of it. Latest pup would actually lift up and carry off a half full bucket (!!!) and then chew it to pieces!

They still paddle in them bowers. :)

 mine have (hopefully) grown out of it now but, just in case, the bowls will go outside in the summer

I tried all sorts of bowls but found the only thing that kept my labs happy was a butler sink .... it works well because they love bathing in it in the summer .... water gets a bit dirty by the end of the day..... but at least they get great fun from it and i dont have to worry about them jumping in the fish pond .....

I was going to post something about this.... my goldie pup likes to paddle in it, splash the water all over the kitchen floor, lick the water up, jump around in the water and bat her bowl from one end of the kicthen to the other.

Then, as I try to mop it up, she attacks the mop. The little monkey.

Gabi used to do this untill we bought a very large stone bowl. I placed the bowl between two cuboards, just enough space for the bowl and her head. She is fine now with this arrangement at home but at the caravan we do not have cupboards with the arrangement. The way we got around this one, was to buy a crate bowl that bolts on and is raised.

I keep goats and have found 2 solutions which have worked for them, so may also work for our canine friends. I have a bowl set inside a tyre or a bucket attached to the wall with a particular ring type bracket which has a fastening to attach the bucket to the ring (www.frenchall-goats.co.uk and follow the link for bucket rings).
