I'm in a bit if  a quandry folks -I would dearly love to import a bitch puppy from an overseas kennel whose dogs I have long admired. After making tentative negotiations I have now been told by a third party, that there is a history of epilepsy in the fourth generation on the mothers side. The sire apears to have no history of epilepsy and both parents are 0:0 hipscored/eyetested clear and are outstannding examples of the breed- do I walk away or do folks think that this is far enough removed not to cause a problem  ?. I would want the bitch to breed from eventually and obviously would not want to pass on any risk of future pups developing epilepsy BUt we have quite a small gene pool and I am sorely tempted to go ahead - what would you do ????

I would talk to the breeder of the litter that you are interested in.

Hi yvonne speak to the breeder and ask them for clarification.

It has been around in some breeds and I think that if you have something that has it way back but nothing in the first 3 generations it is thought to keep breeding to clear lines. Maybe this is what these people have done.  SPeak to them direct.

Think I'll walk away ( sigh) - it is just SOOO difficult to get the whole package right but I dont want to compromise on health - I've lived with epilepsy  - a dog we had from rescue used to fit quite badly although he did live till he was 13 and we had his fits more or less under control for most of his life using Pheno- in fact it's the reason that we had our original foundation bitch spayed when we found out that her mother developed epilepsy at 4 years old.

I'll have to keep looking - I know that there are some safe lines out there - who said that breeding was easy !
