Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / raw food diet?
- By mocket1 [gb] Date 28.02.06 21:22 UTC
Hello

I have 2 boxers and i'm considering switching to a raw meaty bone diet.  At the moment i am feeding burns, i have tried numerous foods as they have suffered from loose motions and itchy skin but nothing seems to help.

Has anyone had their dogs health porblems improve on this kind of diet?

I'm trying to research this before i make any changes and would be very gratefull for any advice/opinions.

many thanks

Gill

Yes.

My dog Rocky had scurfy, itchy skin (i thought hmm, but all dogs scratch) and stinky soft poo, and a fairly strong doggy smell.

On a raw diet now for 3/4 years and hes not at all an itchy scurfy dog and his poo whislt still smelling of poo is firm and considering i have FIVE dogs in a fairly small house, it doesnt smell particularly doggy (and thats what my non doggy friends say!).

Do a search on here there are loads of threads about raw feeding, and search on the net in general as well before you start. It has its benefits but like anything in life its not risk free.

You might want to have a look at this Boxer site. They have a section on raw feeding.

I used to have Boxers and I would switch them to raw if I still did. Saying that like any food it may not suit an individual dog but no harm trying

We switched our dogs to BARF about 2 months ago. Before that they ate Nature diet and James Wellbeloved, and Thunder our 4 year old Weimaraner would often have very runny poo, and often had bouts of diarreah (sp?) and sickness. So far hes been great on BARF, poos are solid and no sicknesss at all. Also, before he would lie on the sofa until his food was ready for him to eat, then plod into the kitchen and eat it, now, he stands crying for me to hurry it up, and hes much more enthusiastic about meal times than he was before, which is lovely, as walks and mealtimes are the highlight of his day :-) The pup has come along in leaps and bounds on BARF, her poos are also solid, where before they were quite soft and sometimes hard to clean up

I can't praise this form of feeding enough. My GSD used to be fed on Royal Canin and had many health problems (at the vets nearly every other week) skin and bladder plus anal glands needed emptying at the vets every month. I switched to BARF last April and since then not one visit to the vet.

I rehomed a dog that had a lot of health issues, allergy test identified several food problems, he went on raw and never had another physical health issue.
