Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / From jwb to Burns..
- By chrisjack Date 03.03.06 09:24 UTC
Morning-
We recently got an order of Burns dog and cat food at work- i discovered the ingredients and they do look better the jwb- my cats and dog are on jwb at present.
Also a 5kg of jwb cat- £20, whereas Burns cat 7.5kg-£23!
and the 7.5kg of dog is £3 cheaper too!
Im thinking of changing them all over onto it- ive heard some dogs lose weight on it, but is that due to the recommended feeding amount on the side?it seems quite low..
Has anyone changed from jwb to burns before? im surprised it costs less..

Thanks in advance- i know this has been discussed before- but hasnt burns changed recently? i think i saw a heated discussion on burns a while back!

Yes, a lot of dogs lose weight when fed the recommended amount of Burns.  If you do a search for Burns you will find many, many previous posts.  Not necessarily a bad thing for a lot of dogs though!    Feeding much more than the recommended amount can cause the runs.

My dogs will not touch Burns.  IMO there isn't enough of a difference in the ingredients between Burns and JWB to choose one over the other - so I'd be guided by how well your dogs do on each food, if you want to try Burns for a time.

I've fed both JWB and Burns to mine, various varieties of both.

I do think that many dogs lose weight on the Burns, but you should be able to compensate for that by feeding more than the recommended amount and by watching your dog.

I also think that Burns has more rice and less meat/protein than JWB - only about 18%, compared to JWB's average 24%.  (Perhaps why it is cheaper?)

Having said that, JWB has salt in the ingredients and Burns doesn't.  JWB also has ingredients such as barley which Burns doesn't.

Both are good foods and you won't go far wrong with either.

Hi
I fed my dog on Burns for a few months and yes he did loose weight. Also I found it made his coat alot worse (he has a slight problem with a few spots and thining of fur) the scurff was much worse and his coat just seemed dull. I have changed onto Arden Grange now, he has been on this for about a few weeks and already his body weight has come back up (feeding the same amount as what I was on Burns) and his coat is improving.

Bear in mind that to compare both brands you need to compare the varieties etc.  Not all Burns varieties contain the same ingredients as each other neither do JWB and so you need to understand whether you are comparing apples with apples or apples with pears! :D

There are other factors that need to be taken into consideration, so that it may not be the brand itself that is the problem but the specific variety.................

Burns IMHO has to low protein and fat content for the canine, to be fed as the SOLE diet. Its good as an extra or addition to the diet,i use it myself, but i would not feed it on its own. Dogs lose weight on it for a reason... This food should >maintain< weight, not make dogs lose it!

thats ok sara- i feed sensitive gold nature diet along with kibble complete food, so maybe increase the nature diet amount fed?

I've fed Venison & Rice, Fish & Rice and Chicken & Rice Burns and would still say that it is low calorie and leads to weightloss when feeding the recommended amount, and for most dogs.

Our now 9 month old Sheltie girl has had both Burns and JWB.  I personally favour JWB due to the varieties (more flavours than Burns) and the ease of obtaining it - PAH and my local pet shop stock it   Our girl is currently on Burns Puppy Bites with some JWB Junior - we were told in no uncertain terms by the vet to get her back onto puppy food after she'd changed herself onto adult at the breeders, but she wouldn't eat just the Burns or JWB puppy food so thats why I have to mix it   IMO coat, health and stool wise both are equally as good but our girl just prefers the JWB! :)

I changed mine from JWB to Burns because one of them was losing weight and his coat was very dry and bitty, he would also get regular bouts of dire rear. The have been on Burns now for almost 2 years and it's suits them all very well, my 13 month pup has been raised on it and he was never thin. I don't give them the ordinary Burns, they have the active which has higher fat and protein levels and maintaining their weight is a doddle. CSJ command performance is another food I have looked at and it is very similar to burns except that it contains egg, you can't get it in the shops though only direct from them or from one of their suppliers.
