Anyone ever had a problem with a shampoo?   I used a l'oreal shampoo at the weekend - the results were not great,  hair looked lank, but I did not think too much about it, thought maybe I had not rinsed properly, and re-washed the next day, lathering and rinsing twice - horror, the effect was 10 times worse!  It had become apparent that the original lank effect was not lack of rinsing, but something in the shampoo coating the hair.  I now looked as if a whole bottle of serum had been poured on my head! Almost impossible to dry, and totally impossible to style!  I re-washed with a different shampoo next day, no improvement, and with yet another next day, shampooing and ringsing 4 times.  Still no improvment - when I walked into anywhere people asked if it was raining, my hair look wet!  Have washed every day since, and no improvement.   I have sent the bottle off to L'oreal, who have said they had no reports of any other faulty bottles in the batch, and cannot tell me what to do till they get the bottle.  Before I sent it, i did a little test, pouring some inot my hand and trying to lather it up wiht water - not only did it not lather, it appeared to emulsify.  Definetly not plain old shampoo in the bottle!

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?  Have done a google search, but can't find anything.  Even tried using washing up liquid today, but still coated in whatever it is. Anyone know of any sites wher people with consumer problems can compare notes?

You could try a medicated shampoo like vosene as they're quite harsh and tend to strip everything off the hair so that might get rid of the coating.  Sounds a bit like it's a dodgy batch of shampoo although someimes these expensive products contain so much rubbish that they don't do your hair or scalp any good at all.

I'm sure a company called St Ives do a special shampoo which is meant to strip the build up of styling products etc from your hair Try doing a 'google' for it, it might help. Hopefully you will hear something back from L'oreal soon.

Sounds awful Gwen.  Just as well it's not Crufts week!!  Head and Shoulders should remove it.

Their are little sachets of detoxifying shampoo in Tesco's, that may help?  If it's the new L'Oreal with oyster silk protein things to make your hair smooth & sleek, I've tried it too and my hair looked so greasy & lank.  It ended up being used on the dogs!

Clarifying shampoo should help,Pantene do one in a clear bottle.I always use it a couple of days before colouring as it gets everything out of your hair.

Hi, this is a bit beyond being just a shampoo which does not suit!  Since the application of whatever was in the bottle (becasue no way could it have been shampoo!!!) my hair has been shampooed 17 times (once on first day, and 4 times per day for 4 days since)  Yesterday I did it with neat fairy liquid, as that strips very well, and nothing!  today I gave head and shoulder a try neat - that is without applying water first, and have managed to move a little, but not much,  I know I got rid of some as there was a thick layer of a gloopy white emulsificaiton in the shower tray!  However hair still looks oiled/soaking wet!  Hairdresser is not willing to do anything to strip it until we know what is on it!  O'oreal rang today to say not yet received the bottle.  Jsut have to wait and see.  Thanks everyone for the tips.

I would ring them again and get them to send a tricologist (Is that the right word????) to have a look and tell you what it is.
Have you taken Photos of what your hair looks like for proof????

Sounds an absolute nightmare your going through. Hope you've kept a journal and taken pics. of all this . I've never heard of any one going through this before, you poor thing! Like Lea says a visit to a tricologist would def. be worth it to find out what's going on with your hair and scalp. Ooh. just read that I'm repeating what Lea suggested, but anyway , def, hope you have done all these things.

Hi again everyone, yes I have kept records of phone calls, number of shampoos etc, and taken a couple of photo's.  I kept a sample too.  My fringe is a bit better now, the fairy helped, but the top of my head, where I must have just put a dollop of the stuff, is still fully coated and waterproof!  Don't know if is is a Trichologist problem, but will bear that in  mind, more of an analytical chemist thing, perhaps!  Loreal say no one else has had any problems wiht this batch of shampoo, which seems odd, you woudl think is something was amiss with one bottle, it woudl effect the whole batch.  Hopefully, will ehar form them on Monday about waht is in the bottle, if not I will have to take my smaple to a lab and see if they can identify it.  Going to be less than well groomed looking at the show tomorrow, also have a family birthday party in the evening, and taking Niece & Nephew to see Appassionatta (the horse thing) Sunday!   Thanks for the advice

Not sure what it would do to your hair but how about one of those hand degreasers used by mechanics. If it is some horrible oil-based chemical that might get it out. A bit drastic, test a bit of hair first.

Cut some little locks off from where it won`t be noticed, in case you need to have it analysed privately & maybe the makers will want to as well.

When I was much younger I used to have my hair up.All backcombed.
It was hell to comb out.Me being clever thought liquid parafin would make it easier.
Mine was the same as yours.I washed it in everything even washing powder.
The one thing that cured it was a dry shampoo.Bought from chemists.
If you can't get any I would think talc has the same effect.

Im a hairdresser so I can help you out with this.

If you ever get a coating on the hair shaft go out and get a deep cleansing shampoo. If you cant find one, use half of a shampoo that you know wont coat your hair, and half gentle dish detergent. Wet your hair with cool to tepid water, lather and leave it to sit for a minuite or so, rinse and repeat.

That should take care of it. Ideally a deep cleansing or clarifying shampoo would be best, but they can be hard to find. I know pantene makes a good one, its in a clear bottle and it is a slightly purple colour.

I just read the rest of the thread. Silly me, should read before posting.
Try something with tea tree oil in it, tea tree shampoo is renowned for stripping everything out of hair, colour, product buildup etc.

Before you use it though, use some hairspray, just enough to make your hair crispy feeling - the hair spray will stick to whatever is coating your hair. Then shampoo out and repeat 4 times.

Simple makes a good shampoo that I use to strip out colour.

Next time you buy shampoo look on the ingreedients for silica or silicone etc. If it has that in it, dont buy ever!!!

If that doesnt work, there is another option, but its more extreem.

Yes, I did indeed take it to Crufts!  Got some imporvement last week by applying the shampoo on before I wet the hair - I had worked this out for myself, and done it over last weekend, but L'Oreal suggested it last Monday (woudl have been more helpful a few days before)  Apparently whatever is on my hair is waterproof, and so wetting before shampooing, the water is forming a barrier!  It is not back to normal, but no longer look soaking wet!    Shoud hear by Tuesday what actually was in the bottle!  Thansk everyone for all the suggestions!
