my bitch as had 3 litters and every time she as needed oxytocin halfway through welping and its always when the vets is closed so i get charged a call out fee of £75 even though i take her into the surgery. Last time she went in twice in the same evening he only charge me £50 the second time. so it cost me £125 and 2 trips into the vets for 2 shots of oxytocin which cost £3 each.
Does anyone know where you can get it from or any vets that will prescribe it for you.

It's a prescription only medicine.  I wouldn't continue to breed from a bitch that needed help every time.

It's absolutely not a "do it yourself" medication. There is the bitches' calcium-levels  to consider, heartfaliour being the worst end of it all,if things go wrong. Agree with above posters, I wouldn't breed from this bitch again.

I wouldn't ahve bred after the bitch had problems with inertia the second time.  This can be an inherited problem, so after two litters both needing assistance it was unwise to mate her a third time.

If her daughters have the sme problem you really ned to look at the viablity of continuing the line, and if you do then you need to find a male where the females are easy whelpers for generations.

What breed is she?  Must admit that my old vet, well he's not actually old, used to let me have some because my girl was always lazy with the last pup, but only because my dad was a diabetic, was used to needles and showed us how to do it properly.  Dependant on the breed many breed clubs only accept 3 litters.

Brainless I think it is even worse this is a 4th. As she has had 3 litters already.

Two things spring to mind , 1)  she shouldn't be bred from and why a 4th litter. ( can't get my head around this even from a healthy bitch unless she is so fundamental to a line)  2)  Can get my head round ever taking risks to save some money. Administering This drug should only be done by the very very experienced.

It's like C sections, there can be a good non hereditary reason for one, so breeding again would be OK after a lot of thought if essential, if it ahppenes again, then I would question the adviseability of breeding from that bitch, I would keep a bitch pup and mate her very carefuly to a line that had good history of easy whelping.

I agree there never should have been a third litter let alone a fourth, the risk to the bitch and pups is just not worth it, as well as perhaps fixing breeding difficulties into a line.

also if oxytocin were given at the wrong time ie if the cervix is closed it could lead to a uterine rupture and death of the bitch!
