The Shikoku is one of 6 japanese spitz breeds. The Akita is the largest, the shiba the smallest. The other 4 ...the Kai,the Kishu, the Hokkaido(Ainu) and the Shikoku are all medium sized spitz.

Not that I know of.The Akita and shiba are the only 2 breeds that have become popular outside Japan....maybe the others don't make good pets.

Desmond Morris describes it as "... one of those breeds that stubbornly attempts to dominate other dogs, but is pleasant enough with its owners." Hmm, sounds like hard work is right mollaholland. It was bred for hunting. There's more info if you want it.

A good friend of mine who lives i Yokohama has 2.
When I was last there the younger of the two was only 6 months.
They are lovley dogs, they can be very 'bouncy' and they do not like cats and other small animals.
Her dogs werent dominering at all, they were quite easy to handle and very well socialised, but that may just have been her dogs and not the norm...
