Freya whelped 16 days ago now and until yesterday evening all seemed well.  Since then everytime she has gone out to poo it is just liquid of a watery consistancy just flooding out of her.  She is a little subdued and is more often away from her puppies than with them.  She ate a bowl full of puppy food this morning and drank some lactol but is definately not herself.  Any ideas out there?  We have an appointment at the vets later this afternoon, but in the meantime I am worrying terribly.

What disinfectant are you using to stop humans/dogs bringing bugs into the house?  Are you taking Freya or any other dogs out for walks?

We use dettox in the house and yes, she is going out for walks with our other dogs.  Is she more susceptable to picking bugs up post whelp?  She isn't vomiting and can hold her poo till she goes out, but as I said it is just liquid.

She's using everything she's got to rear pups!
Dettox???  You need something like Parvocide, which kills viruses, bacteria etc.  A mat soaked so that humans walk through it at the very least.  I wouldn't dream of taking a nursing bitch out but others will think differently.  If I take other dogs to a show when I have pups, they will be sponged down with Parvocide, paying special attention to feet and muzzles.
Is this your first litter?

Yep, this is our first litter - you live and learn as they say!  Next time we will know a bit more.

Who have you got to guide you through this new venture? Is Freya's breeder helping you?

How much Lactol has she had?  Could be that this is disagreeing with her and her stomach may not be able to take the richness of the puppy food too?

I must admit I don't walk my dogs who've had the pups until about week 6 when they don't bother with their pups anymore, just not worth the risk.

She isn't drinking much Lactol - I am topping up the runt of the litter and make up a pint of Lactol, empty 9 oz into a baby bottle, then top up the rest of the Lactol with water for Freya.  She has that once a day.  Freya only has a couple of mug fulls of Puppy food a day mixed with adult food (she is a Weimaraner).  She has been eating and drinking like this since the pups were born, so would it become a problem after doing this for a couple of weeks?

Freya has been going out for walks since the pups were four days old.  She is a very active dog and went mad when the others went out.  I thought by letting her guide us in what she felt ready to do we were doing the right thing

Sorry to hear Freya is unwell. Firstly stop the lactol.  Weimaraners do not tolerate milk well at the best of times.  We usually get away with carnation milk diluted down but thats about it.  Some people use goats milk.
I would not walk a bitch with other dogs, especially if you have to walk out of your garden.
I use virkon S because it is supposed to kill 18 virus families affecting humans and animals. Its effective against E.Coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter.
I usually wash out the whelping box with this, rinse it, and completely dry it before putting vet bed down back in the box.

Weimaraners just like other breeds can pick up infections, so check with your vet that she does not need some antibiotics, or something to stop diarrhoea.    Make sure she is just offered water, and try not to over feed her.  Give her something plain to eat like chicken and rice.
